Killing Joke Chicago 10-14-08

For all the people that said earlier that Ascension of the Watchers was worth seeing live or checking out on CD - what the fuck were you thinking?!? Seriously you must have low fucking expectations. Wow.

They had to be one of the worst bands I have ever seen in person or listened to. They dragged on and on. I saw them forcing people to the back of the venue so they would not be tortured by their sound - I’m serious! They were absolutely horrible and two of them reminded me of some wanna-be Rob Zombie band and the singer, an Interpol wannabe (except he won’t nearly be as cool). I mean I don’t usually say negative shit about a band unless they really were, so take my word: they were absolutely horrendous. Complete waste of time. I refuse, from now on, to ever see an opening band (!!). Terrible. What a waste of time - I went on the recommendation of many on here. I feel so naive and stupid to have listened. People should be more picky when they recommended this band. Absolutely no-one was bobbing their head. No-one even applauded. I knew Burton C. Bell was a complete rip off artist, but this shit is just another level. What pathetic babble - I am pissed I wasted so much of my time at this. Their shit is not even worth downloading from bootleg sites. If this is all 13 Records have going for themselves, God bless them, especially in this crappy economy. I give them not more than a year. If you must listen to this absolute shit, download it and then delete it. What the fuck was Al thinking? Anyhow, on to better things.

I met Repugnant Pete from this forum and we chatted for a bit - it was cool to see him…

Killing Joke. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Jaz Coleman is one of the best frontmen I have seen and they played a LOT of their classics (take note, Ministry). They literally played everything I wanted to hear and were consistent with their sound and their riffs. Geordie? Wow. Youth? Wow. They were all wow. Nine Inch Nails, Ministry and all these other bands as of late in this genre, need to take note: Killing Joke has always been and always will be. This is how frontmen should be and this is how bands should perform. They showed up to play music and did they play. What Manny is to baseball, Killing Joke is to music. Everyone was impressed. Check them out - if you haven’t you have no idea what you are missing… Let’s put it this way, he was so intense, he kept the microphone about half a foot from his mouth and he was still screaming loudly over the speakers! When was the last time you could say that about other acts? Definitely one of the few bands in the past two decades that get it (I mean, come on, Nirvana ripped them off!)

And, of course, he talked a bit politics. He noted how the current US elections is, essentially, like a horse race between two different horses, but they had the same stable owner. How true. Just like I mentioned prior. Al, take note (where has he been anyhow - you would think he would be releasing a lot of press releases on the current elections, encouraging people to vote and voicing his opinion, since he’s so political, but nothing - I must’ve missed it over on the PA but I don’t see anything on their website. Not even a register to vote link.).

They had to be one of the worst bands I have ever seen in person or listened to.

Does that include Nine Inch Nails? I know you’ve been known to dabble and I would imagine seeing those guys in concert would be more or less scraping the barrel’s proverbial.

Yes, shame on you Afra! Shame on you.

Oh, Al has quite the talent for picking winners. Remember SpyderBaby? No? Neither does he.

Do you know the actor Corey Feldman? The guy from Stand By Me and The Lost Boys? Yeah well…anyway, in 1990 or thereabouts, young Corey, possibly high on the fumes of his 15 seconds of fame as well as…oh I dunno…perhaps the odd gram or six of premium grade Columbian, decided that it would be a good idea to put out a solo album. This was news to all and sundry as no one up til that point was under the impression that he had a musical bone in his body (except maybe his mum). But what the hell right!! He’s Corey Feldman and he’s a Hollywood actor on fire with credibility to burn. How could it possibly go wrong you ask!

Well…in the weeks leading up to the release date, Corey bragged constantly and with much gusto to virtually anyone who would listen (Rolling Stone, Spin, Variety, some Asian guy at the bus stop) that said album was going to be a monster, spawing several US no 1 chart toppers and a mammoth US stadium tour that would eventually see him steal the title of King Of Pop from his gal pal Michael Jackson.

[shocked]

Then the album came out, NOBODY bought it, there was NO tour and Corey was left red faced and standing in the shadows picking up what was left of his…um…career. Nowadays he refers to the whole thing as a mistake and that he was listening to people tell him what to do rather than realise his own talents.

That whole incident reminds me of Al and 13th Planet. To a tee. Think about it…for a minute. It really does.

Al = Corey Feldman

Just thought I’d share it with you.

[:)]

i have a vhs tape in front of me, “Rock n Roll High School Forever”, starring the aforementioned actor/king of pop, its a remake of the old Ramones movie, “Rock n Roll High School”, this is not my tape, and i have never watched it, just thought I’d share, and offer my support to peligro’s analogy.

Y’know a similar thing happened to Peter Criss, the original drummer from Kiss. Back in 1980 he had just left Kiss and had the world at his feet with a new solo album on the eve of release. He also bragged to anyone who would listen that it was going to be huge, bigger than anything his former band had released, and that a massive arena tour of the US was imminent.

Well, come release day, the album, ‘Out Of Control’ was vilified by the press and completely ignored by the already dwindling Kiss fan base. There was one concert in a suburban high school gymnasium somewhere that was cancelled due to lack of interest.

He was obviously delusional. Probably the coke. I don’t think he ever recovered. What a way to publicly humiliate yourself.

Remember it like it was yesterday. I should too as I was one of only 100 or so fans who bought the damn thing, being an impressionable 12 year old Kiss fanatic!

Glad I’m not the only person who thinks that. Absolute PISH!

Glad you enjoyed KJ as much as myself Afra. Like I said earlier…this is a special tour due to the line-up and everyone that caught them caught some music history. Now we’ve got a new album from them to look forward to.

As for Al and his voicing of politics during this upcoming election…that’s a great point. I still check out the PA and I must say I haven’t seen or heard a peep out of Al with regards to this election? I wonder why???

KILLING JOKE RULE!!!

AotW… Haven’t yet listened to them fully, but judging by everyone’s reaction to them on the board, there’s a fifty/fifty chance I’ll fucking loathe them or fall madly in love with them.

Excellent show review, Afra. Another piece of musical history I’ll most likely miss… DAMN ME. By the way, that Ghostbusters comment really does apply here. “Who you gonna call? JAZ COLEMAN!”

As for the Corey Feldman and Peter Criss albums… man… I think I gotta track these down. [:)]

I dont recall anyone actually praising AotW on this board. The consensus rather seemed to be that it was a surprisingly listenable album that everybody was expecting to be completely abominable. I still hold this to be true, certain songs on the LP are decent darkwave, inspired by Lycia and Fields Of The Nephilim.

Naturally, no idea how they sound live, although judging by Burton’s generally terrible live performance with Fear Factory, I wouldn’t be surprised if I also thought they are terrible live.

Are you just trolling now or what? I don’t think anyone with any concept of subjective opinion has ever said Nine Inch Nails is bad live.

As for Ascension of the Watchers, the album is ok, though often dull. I can see that they wouldn’t be much fun to watch on stage.

I don’t remember any praise about aotw either. I said they were decent in comparison to what ministry’s become, and prolly the best act on the label so far (insult!). I wouldn’t pay for it, BUT, I wouldn’t necessarily call it terrible - just not good either.

I have always enjoyed NIN live. going to see them in less than a month, and i’m quite excited. he’s always played a good mix of old and new stuff, and always changes up the stage / lighting to keep it interesting.

i’ve seen nin a bunch of times and my only complaint now is that his old song choices are the expected head like a hole, closer, hurt etc tracks. but it wasn’t always this way. i think he forgets how dedicated his fan base is/was and that a good percentage of them have already seen him multiple times and are sick of hearing that shit. but its a great setlist if you’ve never seen them before. but after seeing them at lollapalooza this summer i can safely say i will never pay to see nin live again. at this point i’d rather go to a fear factory gig than a nin show. but obviously not an ascension show after seeing afra’s review.

Wow I do sound negative - didn’t mean to. But honestly, not worth it to see the opening act. Killing Joke made up for it. I don’t know where I read good comments on AotW - may not have been here. I did on some board or reviews.

i’ll tell you what happened to spyderbaby:

THEY WANTED TO GET PAID!

(true story, btw–from the horse’s mouth)

Yes he needs to chill out with Closer and Hurt, i wonder if he’s tired of playing those songs. He should replace them with some Fragile material.

from what i understand for this killing joke tour, they play 2 dates in each city ( i may be wrong) and the first night is the first 2 cds and the second night is a best of

as far as AOTW, the cd is alright, but live? well having heard the cd (slow laid back, etc.) i can’t imagine being happy putting up with that waiting to see the first killing joke us tour in god knows how long…

makes me wonder what every here thinks the worst opening band they saw was (name bands, not just some local tools doing their first show)

Type O Negative opening for Pantera was brutal.
The sound wasn’t that great, and Pantera being so intense and full of speed… Type O was just way too sssssllllllllooooooow.

QOTSA opening for NIN was death too.

Revco opening for Ministry was pretty cool though.

As a side note: Heaven and Hell (Sabbath with Dio) who were the headliners, got blown away by the openers: Down, when they were here.

makes me wonder what every here thinks the worst opening band they saw was (name bands, not just some local tools doing their first show)

Grim Fairies opening for (I think) TKK.
Monster Magnet opening for Rob Zombie.

Opeth opening for Kreator

uploaded some clips from gigs on my youtube, killing joke is in there:
