Ok, so if anybody wants to post other worthy projects in this thread, that would be awesome.

Right now I want to tell you guys about my very good friend Randy’s new board game he developed with his brother in law. It’s a steampunk airship racing board game, and it’s really fun. They have two goals, one will get the game produced and ready to go, and if they reach the higher target, the board will be double sided with two different maps to race on. They have some cool incentives too, like a handmade wooden box edition of the game and getting your face in the game art.

That’s rad. I never was much into board games, but they seem like one of those things that will die off in the future to me, like the US postal system, drive-in theaters and paper porn. Hope he gets it going!

They met their goal and were close enough to the secondary goal that they said fuck it, and are making up the difference themselves to print the double sided board. Dope!

Cool! I’m impressed they were able to raise that much that fast, but it does sound like a fun game. For me the fun of a board game consists much in it’s physicality. If all you have is a flat board with some flat cards, that’s pretty lame (we can have a 2D existence on a PC or TV just as well).

But being able to play with fake money, roll dice, have some cool looking metal character pieces (I’m ALWAYS the dog in Monopoly), and other tangible attributes (how fun is it loading up your LIFE car with a spouse and kids?) is really what makes a board game special ---- that and the social aspect of it.

I think there’s something reassuringly old-fashioned and real about people sitting around a table or on the floor playing a game. You’re there, you’re looking at each other, you’re talking. Video games can’t give you that human connection that board games (or card games) can.

Anyway, good luck to your friends! I wish them well.

This project looks really cool.
