I quite liked the Pumpkins up to Machina in my “young” days.
I do not listen to them anymore, and their last record is pure crap.
But in the growing-up days they had influence on me - I can’t deny it.

The only Pumpkins song I can really say I like is Rhinoscerous. Like the bass and nice guitar work.
Billy really wore his inspirations on his sleeve… first james, then kurt, then he kinda took off on his own and then he mimicked uncle fester and then they broke up… all was good… then he got back together with that horrific album… what was it 5 different covers… certain chains had extra songs, plus the 5 different colored covers, plus i-tunes exclusives… plus the extra special cd version, etc… he really stuck it to his fans with the last one, who wanted all the songs and were collectors.
Yeah, don’t get me wrong, that new album totatlly blows. All his solo/side bands have that same drummer, the drummer who along with Billy were the only two original pumpkins, so why call it a Pumpkins album at all unless you’re going for a cash grab? The new album is Billy jerking off and trying to pretend that he still still rocks while he knows he’s growing old and becoming a has been…
That being said I still strongly believe Siamese Dream was brilliant. It was made before he was a total rockstar and let it all get to his head. I can understand if you don’t like Billy’s voice, but he captured a fucking wicked guitar tone. His guitar had the pop qualities of classic rock mixed with that nasty distorted tone pioneered by the likes of Steve Albini and other Chicago indie alum. IMO it’s one of the truly quintessential albums of the 90’s.
I think that “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” is one of the best 90s hard rock tracks written

“Hole” had their moments, but Courtney is a collagen inflated Hollywood tramp these days IMO.
The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the few bands i like from the 90’s grunge scene. AND unlike bands like Nirvana there hasnt been a shit load of copycats. The pumpkins are original

I never really liked Siamese Dream. The production is way too clean, it was a post-Nevermind (thanks Butch Vig) album that got too much acclaimed. I’m not denying there’s good tracks on it, but I guess I’ve never been a big fan and I even own it.
I loved Machina, though. The first one.
Could never bring myself to listen to this album - as in sit down and take it all in type listen. I’ve heard it plenty of times though - my sister used to play it ad nauseam in her bedroom (loudly). That and Achtung Baby by U2.

although i could never get over the vocals, one thing I always thought the Pumpkins were good at is creating a powerful, layered guitar sound. This is seperate from their songwriting abilities (which I dont really want to discuss here), I am merely talking about how the guitars are recorded and engineered into sounding really textured. From an engineering point of view it is definitely impressive and sounds good. For this reason, I usually dont mind if someone is playing the heavier Smashing Pumpkins songs to me.

His name was Jonathan Melvoin, his sister was in Wendy and Lisa. He was once the drummer for the Dickies, and well as playing keyboards live with Chris Connelly oddly enough. Not much a fan of the Pumpkins, but as someone posted earlier I can appreciate the sonics, and engineering of their guitar sound.
