Well, sounds like you took the Al Jourgensen school of story telling.
We were doing a lot of drugs and drinking and everything was out of control. When we wrote the track, “Purgatory,” I blacked out and woke up in jail. I was basically bottoming out and everything was completely fucked up. Halfway through the writing process, I went to Israel and had this awakening and cleaned up my act.

VOIDHEAD: Could you tell us more about your trip to Israel and this “awakening” of yours?
I went to Israel and had a spiritual awakening of sorts. I’d been trying to get off booze and drugs for about 2 years prior and couldn’t seem to kick it. I’d been getting arrested a lot and in some hairy situations including almost committing murder on more than one occasion. Shit was getting serious. In Israel I touched the Western Wall and had a vision of madness and a bunch of kaleidoscopic eyes and flames. Hard to explain, but I was not intoxicated and I believe it was a glimpse of my future if I did not clean up my act. I was convinced I would commit murder. I broke down while drinking on the flight back from the trip and had a “white light” experience where I surrendered control finally admitting I cannot do this anymore. Shortly thereafter I began my recovery and now have 13 months sober hence the progress you see in my artistic endeavors.
