[reply]If only other teachers could be as cool as that. What Aphex Twin do you play for them? I would presume the ambient pieces.
Yep, Selected Ambient Works Vol. II. They were studying spooky stories, so I wanted to give them some mood music. I tried to mix it up with Daniel Menche and the soundtrack for the Shining, but they kept requesting SAWII Disc 2 Track 11.[/reply]
‘The Shining’ soundtrack still scares me. Fuppin brilliant.
I like keeping a mental list of the music that I’ve used for educational purposes (ie: last year the kindergarteners wrote stories while listening to Coil, and the third graders have gotten a healthy dose of Aphex Twin this year).
That is SO cool!
Selected Ambient Works II is a masterpiece beyond reckoning.
Yeah i wish I could play music in my class but I’ve tried before and they all want Biggie or Pac and when I try to play music anyway they just use it as an excuse to talk rather do their work. certainly jealous of you Sir/Madam! the only time a riff is cool to these kids is if it’s been sampled and put in an R&B song!
Late,

haha i know what you mean grmpysmrf, my cousins are exactly like that. If i play Laibach or something they give me a look like “WTF”, me: “i dont have any emenim, sorry dumbass’s”

It’s kinda funny; the elementary kids will get into whatever music I bring in, but a lot of the high school students are incredibly quick to label music as “weird,” and if it’s weird they don’t want anything to do with it.

Biggie and Pac are good choices. I would think hs students would be listening to the new crop of horrible rap/hip-hop. At least they like the good stuff. If they want hip hop, bring in some Souls of Mischief, Wu-Tang, Aesop Rock, Beastie Boys, Outkast, Kool Keith, Del, Cappadonna, the Roots, Jurassic 5, Saul Williams, The Bug…There used to be some really good hip hop in the '90s, and there still is if you look hard for it today. Most of it is just repetitive bullshit about rims and hos made to sell ringtones and make for one hit wonders.

yeah, you actually have nice moldable minds when they’re that young… no real bias to the labels around them. well played.

Our MTV generation ended long ago most likely, heh. Aphex Twin compared to the current “rock” bands like Hinder, 3 doors down, etc…way too much for their feeble minds to digest. Give em’ some neubauten and watch em’ squirm!
I work for a publishing company, preparing layouts for magazines, journals etc.
It’s not bad work but I haven’t had a pay rise in many a year (whinge whinge…). I’m also gettin’ real sick of watching employees rise above their relative positions here for shallow reasons. One young girl, with the company for a little over a year, got a major promotion over much, much more worthy applicants to the role, simply because she was (very) good looking. The official reason for her promotion was that she “presented the company with fresh and bold new ideas and had an enthusiastic approach to her new role and was a dedicated team member”.
Which is bullshit…She looks good in a mini skirt and likes a slap and a tickle from the management types now and then when they think nobody is looking. I mean, the bitch can’t even spell and when ask to prepare a presentation to prospective investors recently, she hired some guy to come in and talk about new technology developments in the publishing field. Then she showed some slides that someone had given her. The sales team all think she’s wonderful amd more than worthy of the promotion.
They must think we’re all stupid. I hope she gives each and every one of them the clap.

Don’t worry; given enough time, everything will right itself. A former manager that I had did the same thing. Everyone knew it. They both fucked up the dynamics of the department and eventually found different jobs.
