JG Thirlwell & Zola Jesus

These two collaborated on an album of Zola Jesus songs called Versions. In the spirit of all those mid-90’s reviews that compared Foetus and Nine Inch Nails, let me say that this is going to shit all over How To Destroy Angels (which rarely rises above mediocre).

I’m really glad to see any new work from Thirlwell. He’s been incredibly reliable, although I did think that his last Foetus album (Hide) was sub-par.

Good stuff.

In defense of HTDA, they are going for a hybrid of the later ambient era Coil with a pop flavor.

Foetus and NIN was always a silly comparison. Presumably it was because they both did industrial and Thirlwell remixed some NIN songs. But it’s like comparing Yes to Black Sabbath because they both did rock in the '70s and Rick Wakeman played on “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”.

In my estimation Foetus/NIN comparisons start and stop at the Gash album. That’s the one Jim licensed to a major label and there’s some dips into what one could arguably call industrial-rock. None of it sounds contrived and Thirlwell seems like a person with strong convictions so I doubt if the label gave him guidelines.

Looking forward to this collaboration. He never repeats himself and his composing talents will lend itself great to her singing style. I also enjoy the little I’ve heard from Zola so there’s my blind enthusiasm right there.
