Yeah, i saw this in my local record store a few months ago. The whole story of this guy is fascinating. He was some kind of superstar in South Africa but completely ignored in his native USA. Anyway, people went looking for him several years ago and found him on a Detroit building site earning shit all money. They organised a tour and he ended up playing to packed stadiums in South Africa and other places too. He was out here in Australia for a tour in '06 I believe, this is a guy who didn’t even know people listened to his music. I’m sure this is all in toot’s link though.
His other record, coming from reality, is very good as well. There are a pair of guys on triple Zed (Brisbane radio station) on a Monday afternoon who play Rodriguez at least once every time they are on. Recommended if you like trippy old folk music!
Awesome Irish DJ/Producer David Holmes started off one of his mix albums with “Sugarman” a few years back and that created alot of interest in the man again among his (Holmes) fans.
Yeah, I’ve been meaning to check that out. I think he started popping up on the radio here a lot more after ‘Sugar Man’ was in ‘Candy’, the Heath Ledger junkie movie.
