jesu 'Infinity' review

Yeah, yeah.

“Devastating”.

I’m sure it will differ radically from the last two or three releases.

Brian Eno he ain’t.

Brian Eno he ain’t.

Of course he friggin isn’t…he’s Justin Broadrick!

A Jesu album produced by Brian Eno would be kick ass! Of course Brian Eno ain’t no King Tubby though.

song at the link. i loved it, and it was very ‘silver-ish’ IMO.

Broadrick’s the man. Period.

The only thing that could make him even more the “man” in my eyes would be for him to go down Kevin Martin’s road and start making some bad-ass Dubstep records.

Why?!?!?!?

WHAT IS HE DOING THAT’S SO SPECIAL?!?!?!

Slow/Mid Tempo shoegazer post rock/ metal!!! This is what has you so flabbergasted??? I’ve heard so much of this type of thing over the past 15 years. It’s nothing new. Really. His music is good and I enjoy listening to selected albums but recently he’s taken his artistic development…pretty much nowhere. Even the album artwork is a yawnfest. Where’s the creative growth and maturity? How is he challenging himself artistically with this new stuff?? I don’t see it. It’s all the more disappointing considering how he introduced himself with an enormous BANG that was heard around the world during the late 80s. Now he’s content to merely float along on the back of past achievements.

It’s all so one dimensional and transparent. [/reply]

This is more or less how I feel about the whole Jesu thing. The last one I really liked was ‘Silver’.

The band really needs some fresh blood in the studio. An artistic foil to spice things up a bit.

So…

What you’re saying is that Broadrick needs a Flavor Flav to his Chuck D?

I got that Silver feel on this one too. Not exactly what I was hoping for but with the way things have been going I have no clue what the other 3 songs could sound like. It may be a mixed bag. Who knows? I like it in a way but I’m hoping the rest of the EP will be different.

No.

I think he’d prefer a Yoko Ono to his John Lennon[cool]

eh, didn’t he try that with Jarobe in the decent at best J2 project?

anyway, just got the Jesu and Final. Looks like I’ll have some time in the afternoon later to listen to these 3 albums. really excited about the new Final (plus reading all the right signals wrong comes out soon too…3 final albums in the span of 2 weeks!? )

after listening to Infinity twice today, I actually have a very differing opinion than Mick’s. I actually prefer the album starting at the 25 min mark! The beginning of the album seems somewhat forced, and the “Godflesh-like” part just seems like it HAD to be put in there…I dunno. That’s just how I felt. But I really love the riffage and the layerings staring around 25 mins in, it’s really one of his better Jesu riffs and vocals.

Final- only listened to each album once, and I admit- not Final’s strongest output. I think this is because I felt Dead Air was such an amazing record that I couldn’t give this a fair chance. Again, this was just one listen. It fits nicely with that 4 cd set he released a year or two ago. But I’m looking forward to the next proper album in a few weeks time.

And I went to the local record shop today and found a copy of Grey Machine!! Surprised I haven’t really seen ANY talk about this record on this forum. Have only listened to the first two songs so far and WOW…I will probably start a thread for it later tonight or tomorrow.

Greymachine’s been mention. First listen gave me a headache. Interesting listen, but to me, it’s like a bunch of incoherent noise. Take Final and White Static Demon and put in some real noticable guitar and very low and unnoticable vocals and you get Greymachine.

And as a matter of fact, I got my package today. Tore off the wrapping for Final, ripped it, and love it. I was pretty excited to hear how it would turn out when JKB described his method for it. Not as different as I was expecting, but it’s nice.

And remaining on topic with Final. When is the Signals album supposed to come out?

actually, i didn’t mention Greymachine but i’ve had it for a while now. I like it , but it’s got elements of Techno-Animal, ICE and Godflesh. Enjoyable, a wee bit of the same-y through out, altho, Wasted and Sweatshop really jump out at me after even just a few listens…

wow, just listened to Infinity which is great but Greymachine is haunting as fuck!

Jesu is one of the few bands that are such a part of my soul now that with each new release I’ll go out of my way to immerse myself fully in the experience of soaking in every note and nuance as attentively as I can. This usually means the routine of a late night walk. Haven’t done that yet with Infinity. Some initial impressions:

The opening couple minutes threw me offguard at first, but I think they’re appropriate. When the guitars, drums and bass come in I’d say it’s a really solid consolidation of everything that makes Jesu what it is. Simple but suitable drumming, chord arrangements that make my heart hurt and vocals that never distract me from the power of his music.

I agree Mick that the Godflesh-sounding segment is the best, and to me, most stirring part of this piece. The doom riff at 15:42 slays backed with those Heartache drum machines. WEEEEAKNESSS. YOUR NIGHTMARES! Holy shit, this is heavy.

The droning segment is a bit plodding, but I find myself drawn to it. Builds on “Falling from Grace”. Around the forty minute mark is the big emotional money shot. The bassline begins changing and the open notes he’s playing start ringing more. Same KICK IN THE GUTS as the end of “The Rain Song” I reckon!

Not sure what sort of moments everyone was expecting out of a track of this length, but I think there’s enough magic Jesu moments to make me happy.

Greymachine’s been mention. First listen gave me a headache. Interesting listen, but to me, it’s like a bunch of incoherent noise.

Yeah I’m not a fan either.

If only it had SOME structure. Some people can pull it off, but in this case it’s just NOISE. Lots of static, with a dash of guitars buried in the static, with vocals somewhere in the mix, but i’ve yet to really notice. After Infinity’s godflesh moment, I got very excited for this, but it just turned out to be a completely incoherent disappointment.

What are you talking about??

GreyMachine is the best thing he’s done in years. Shits all over Conqueror.

BTW just bought a copy of Techno Animal’s ‘Re-Entry’ off ebay for only $10. I’ve seen copies of this lil’ monster sell for over $150. What a bargain.

I’ve been after this album for years.

Re-Entry is one of my favorite albums Justin has done. As a matter of fact, besides Solaris, it’s my favorite thing he’s done.

Great, full production, full of layers and different style beats. Disc 2 is mostly ambient stuff. I wrote a review for Re-Entry on amazon.com a few years back actually.

Grey Machine- I actually like it. I didn’t think I was going to originally. Quite honestly I’m not much into that type of music at all anymore, but the consistency of the record stood out for me. It was kind of a more musical, slower version of the last Curse of the Golden Vampire…and I guess it’s good to throw something like that on from time to time. Loved the bass on the record.

It’s just layers of static and distortion. I can honestly say that i’ve paid little attention to the bass parts. The album is consistent and flows together, but it literially is a huge wall of static with heavy distorted guitars, and inaudible vocals that are supposedly there, but so unnoticeable with all the noise that I hardly believe there are any, and anything remotely close to a “voice” is probably just a very distorted synth. I just consider the album a bit on the unlistenable side. And I actually enjoyed the White Static Demon album.

I’m almost afraid to check out Infinity - it’s been built up so highly with so much debate.

Unfortunately, some of the reviews I have read as of late are less than complimentary. Some have even gone so far as to call this Justin’s ‘St Anger’ and have described as woefully average. A few fans have heckled the Godflesh moments on the album calling them insipid and uninspired grunting. And these comments have come from fans who loved Heartache and Jesu.

This could be bad…

You’re in la la land!

Re-Entry is top notch. Great Dub album.

honestly. It’s probably one of those albums to just check yourself. It’s gotten some real mixed reviews here, but, there’s pretty much been that line between the yay and naysayers I think. Either you like it, or you don’t. I think it’s a good balanced album of him going old school, but mixing that in with his new sound. I went into it without samples or reviews, and just bought it on the mere question of how it would sound and how the album will work out as a single 50 minute track.

First listen, I immediately thought at the beginning that it actually sounded great, and he did a great job at blending up the parts and transition and such. Then the godflesh part comes up which was a very
nice surprise.

My only gripe about the album is that the second half seems a bit forced and out of steam. I start to lose some interest towards the 40 mark. But it’s a pretty good effort imo. But I went into it completely went into it blindly, which is a rare sight these days.
