Jazz

Any jazz fans here?

Just curious. I don’t remember ever seeing a jazz thread on this forum. Thought it was about time.

Miles Davis? Ornette Coleman? John Zorn? Eric Dolphy? Sonny Sharrock?

Anyone have any fave jazz albums or albums they’s recommended to someone lookin’ to head down that path?

I like Miles Davis. Particularly:

Kind Of Blue
Bitches Brew
Miles On The Corner
Live Evil
Agharta
In A Silent Way

I dont know jack-all about Jazz - but I would love to hear some good stuff. A friend used to listen to heaps, but I never got who it was - I know some was Mingus and thats it.

Some crazy stuff like the style the character plays at start of Lost Highway… any artists sound like that?

Yeah agreed. I own Coltrane’s FAVORITE THINGS on tape, it’s good for a fall Sunday, but I like Sonny Sharrock, of course due to the space ghost theme. I like that kind of stuff. Similar sounds???

Wow i remember this! It was such a mindfuck at a young age, I was like this is weird…but I love it!

Sun Ra’s the man.

Amon Tobin is God. Even the old hard-core traditionalist Jazz heads go bananas over Amon’s “Bricolage” and “Permutation”…ESSENTIAL!!

Miles Davis “Live Evil” is one of the deadliest live albums around. The Dark Magus is the other Miles live album which is fucking spectacular…hunt that one down if you think Live Evil is the shit.

My favourite Miles album is “Get Up With It”. That is sublime and kick-ass.

Obviously you can’t go wrong with “Kind Of Blue”, “In A Silent Way” and “Bitches Brew” etc etc…

Seriously though if you want Jazz that is really out there, you can’t beat Sun Ra.

I don’t listen much to the classics (though I should) but I do listen listen a fair bit to Terje Rypdal, who’s often lumped in the jazz category. His music is more jazz fusion than jazz. ‘Vossabrygg’ is a very good album of his which features ‘Ghostdancing’ an epic song that is based on ‘Bitches Brew’. Well worth checking out.

Anything with Max Roach and you are good to go.

Try “Three Giants” It’s got Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, and Clifford Brown. It’s pretty easy to find and usually not too expensive (unlike some other treasures).

Damned straight!

Sonny Sharrock was the shit. I remember that episode of space ghost coast to coast (the guest was thurston moore). He comes on says hello, 15 minutes of sonny’s music, then they say thanks for stopping by and :scene:

good times…

you’re in for a good time if you find an old vinyl with the whole afro-futuristic-vibe with the weird egypt oufits

I listen to classic jazz and blues when I’m winding down or cooking dinner, great stuff. Big fan of Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Miles Davis.

1002

Check out Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Good stuff.

Best Jazz:

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Miles Davis - Live Evil
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
John Zorn - Naked City
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Rip, Rig And Panic
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
Dexter Gordon - Go

Off the top of my head. There’s loads more you should check out…
Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz

ICK.

What you NEED to listen to is :

Billie Holiday
Ella Fitgerald
Django reinhardt
Cole Porter
Cab Calloway
Duke Ellington
Edith Piaf

I could make this list go on, but if you want the good stuff you gotta go pre-1940 fo anything of quality. Tust me on this.

Heh… My economics teacher in high school was probably the craziest, most demented motherfucker on the face of the Earth, and would ALWAYS be blasting classic jazz before/after/during class.

Guy was fucking weird. Like some crazy fusion of the Mad Money guy and Jack Nicholson. I was perpetually blazed in that class, yet managed to be one of the only students that year to ace it.

Dunno much about jazz, but I do dig what I’ve heard.

I love Edith Piaf. Her voice makes me feel warm…her life story is something crazy…
