Jarboe

I got into her after getting into Swans recently listening to the incredible ‘Children of God’. I am going to see her soon here in NYC in June. Do you guys like her?

I’ve noticed a lot of people around here converting to indie rock faggotry. Maybe you’re not looking in the right places for good intellectual heavy music?

What, like that faggot Marilyn Manson?

Look, not everyone on this board paints their fingernails black. There’s plenty of good heavy music (Dog Fashion Disco, Mastodon, the Human Abstract, Jesu, He Is Legend, High on Fire, Meshuggah, Down, the Sword, Norma Jean, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, In Flames, Lamb of God…), but there’s a lot of good indie rock, that you are missing out on by being closed minded.

I doubt Jarboe would think very highly of your attitude, voidhead.

lol I was not being serious about Indie Rock. Every genre has its ups and downs blah blah etc. I think indie tends to be rather bland which to me is the worst thing music can be (you know my flare for the outrageous, stylized, over-the-top etc. so guys wearing plain clothes and singing plain songs is about the last thing I want in music) but obviously there are exceptions.

But back on topic who likes Jarboe, specific releases, is she good live?, anything about her etc.

She has peaked my interest lately first with some previews of her new album I heard awhile ago, then my discovery of Swans and now with the upcoming concert I’m attending.

I think she’s terrible. I love industrial music but not really any of the goth music. For some reason to a large majority of industrial fans, the two are interchangeable, but even bands like Skinny Puppy were too much for me most of the time because I never liked the way Ogre’s voice was so over the top with trying to sound scary or evil. I’ve never understood the obsession with darkness and blood and all that shit. Or people who want to be vampires or witches. It seems like demented child’s play. That’s how Jarboe comes off to me.

She’s really cool live.
I have a couple of old friends that were in her band for awhile.

I do like Swans, though, and I thought her collaboration with jesu was pretty good.

Yes, I have always thought it was great that Jarboe was from Atlanta, and subsequently Swans was based here for awhile in the '90s. Last time I saw her out and around was at a Legendary Pink Dots show with Dead Voices On Air. She is a pretty intense lady, maybe not as much as Diamanda Galas, but in that same general area. I haven’t heard her project with Justin yet, been meaning to pick that up.

This had to be said.

And thankyou for being the one to say it.

HATE that Goth EBM '90s SHIT!!! Makes me puke.

Ive seen her live a week ago. Amusingly, I just went to hang out at my favorite local club without prior knowledge that she was to play there that night… Talk about a good surprise.

Anyway, she was good, looked possessed on stage. Her band actually sounded pretty metal to me and not all that experimental. Had a talk with them after the show, they were all really nice people and Jarboe herself was also very approachable and not stuck-up at all.

I liked her on a few Swans tracks (I’ll Swallow You, Volcano)

Didn’t like the jesu song she did.

“Shhhhhtorm coming on now”

Nah

While i mostly enjoy her work with Swans, I haven’t been a fan of her other collabs mostly. While I enjoyed the jesu cut, i didn’t dig J2 at all. =/

I do however LOVE the Jarboe & Neurosis record.

Jarboe is superb.

Her Jesu track is fantastic.

Her stuff with Swans is sublime.

If you like Swans/Jarboe stuff, their album “White Light from the Mouth of Infinity” is ESSENTIAL. Easily their finest hour.

“White Light” is my favorite Swans album too. Great album through and through.

Ditto. Jarboe’s songs here are really good, but this album also has the soul-crushing stygian blackness that is Failure.

My next fav is easily the Bill Laswell produced “The Burning World”…that is sublime…even if Michael Gira was unhappy with the album.

Both White Light… and Love Of Life are indeed great albums. Particularly Love OIf Life which is a little less overblown than its predecessor.

Jarboe is hit and miss - but her vocal work on Children Of God is more or less stellar.

Not a fan of J2.
