Well, it seems Jandek is coming to Melbourne this month.
I’m keen to go. But, I know fuck all about Jandek. All I’ve heard is what I’ve read on his Wikipedia page and this one time a pal sent me his work over the net saying ‘how the fuck is this music, LULZ’ and then sent me some Steve Vai and Joe Satriani faggotry.
Can anyone recommend some of his works? I’ve got no idea where to start!
Jandek is excellent when you’re in the right mood. Avoid the later-period acapella albums, but the earlier stuff is perfect late night music. I’d recommend Chair Beside a Window as a good introduction, because it has his most accessible song, “Nancy Sings” (on which, presumably, someone named Nancy sings, instead of Jandek). I wouldn’t pass up the chance to see him live. If nothing else, it’ll be an experience.
Oh, and if you haven’t seen it, the documentary Jandek on Corwood is fantastic. The music might not for everybody, but the lore behind Jandek is irresistible.
