iPod Nano

Has anyone seen these?

I bought the 4gb in black color. Apparantly, it’s better sound quality than the standard iPod. This one isn’t hard drive based.

It was announced recently and looks ridiculously slick: 1.5 ounces and is thinner than the Shuffle…

looks very sweet!

That thing is crazy, I just saw the commercial for it tonight.

I’m spending about the same amount this week too, only it’s on Sirius Satellite Radio. Sirius has a $30 rebate on all their receivers that expires on October 1st, plus I found a killer deal on a complete package, so I’m taking the plunge now. Can’t wait.

is it a local deal or something you can share? My wife wants satellite for xmas…want to get the best deal…anyone???

RevCo,

Here’s the link from the site where I’m buying my receiver. Judging by the name, it might be right in your backyard:

I’m buying the XACT XTR7CK, which is more than 1/2 way down the page. Their package includes the home and car kits for only $109 (the home kit itself is about $45). With the rebate, the whole thing comes to $79.99. Shipping is only 10 bucks and change for UPS ground. In order to get the rebate, you have to pre-pay for 6 months of service ($12.95/mo., comes out to about $78). Online activation is only $10, so the grand total to start listening barely tops $200. This month is probably the best time to do it, if you want to save some $$.

Would it be smart to get Sirius if you like, say, electronic or experimental music?? XM has a soundtracks station, which i’m a sucker for score work… would you still go with Sirius? I’m on the fence.

Sirius has a soundtrack station called Sirius Pops. It appears that it’s more orchestral-based soundtracks, such as John Williams, James Horner, etc. I wouldn’t mind a more electronic-based soundtrack station, myself. I’m a sucker for stuff like the Blade Runner soundtrack, or anything done by Michael Brook or Angelo Badalamenti. The electronic stations aren’t too experiemental, though I listened to a station called Chill on a co-worker’s receiver, and it plays a lot of downtempo, electronica, and ambient electronic music. Good station for work. The stations I’m looking forward to are 1st Wave (new wave/classic alternative) which features Richard Blade (ex KROQ DJ) and Fred Schneider from the B-52’s, the Jazz and Blues Stations, and unedited Howard Stern.

By-the-way, what’s that soundtrack station on XM called? I was looking around the site, but didn’t see it.

i assume they are just switching over to embedded flash memory instead of hdd then? also, what’s this about better sound quality you say? intriguing.

Please don’t laugh at this question, but…

If you get an iPOD, do you need to download songs from iTUNES? Like will it play mp3’s that I burn myself, or do they have to come from Apple?

No - it’s essentially a hard drive.

When you plug it into a computer (through USB) it will be recognized as an external hard drive. You can put other files on there too. I just create the MP3s from my CD collection and then put them on there. No iTunes.

Apparantly, from something I read, MP3s read from hard drives loose some quality. I don’t know if this is noticeable but I will soon when the nano arrives.

Some reviewer of the nano said:

" Plugged into my car speakers, it was able to belt out the new Fountains of Wayne rocker, “Maureen,” loudly enough to be heard perfectly, even though I was going 70 mph in a convertible with the top down.’"

1002 didn’t they have a deal where you paid like 500 for life…no monthly fees?

Yes, $499 will get you a lifetime subscription from Sirius. The offer expires in January '06 (end of the month, I believe).

Never heard of that, and I don’t see any reason why that should be the case, after all, all the circuitry for converting the mp3 data to sound shouldn’t be able to tell the difference between bits read from a Hard Disk and bits read from something else as far as I know; it’s all just 0s and 1s after all…

Although I think there can be a problem when you are reading large files from a hard disk; i.e. either songs encoded at high bitrates or long songs, as you might hear a gap when the iPod loads the data from the Hard Disk into its cache… that’s why the whole thing is probably optimised for 3minute 128kbps songs (ugh.)
