any organic elements brought are welcomed in rap/hip-hop.
The Blink 182 guy is a great drummer. I thought that band was just about to head into a mature, powerful direction that would’ve given them a place in music history. Instead the one guy went the route of U2 imitating art-rock self-indulgence and the other two went and started a new band of immature early Blink 182 style pop-punk.
Oh well.
I like the two drum sticks in his right hand. [tongue]
Couldn’t help myself kids…just check out Terry Bozzio playing the Zappa piece ‘The Black Page’.
Unbelievable.
Zappa wrote this for Bozzio; it’s called The Black Page because the score is just a bunch of dense black stuff on the page.
Anyway…even if you’re not into FZ, you’ve gotta love cool drumming…Bozzio is not bad at all!

Oh…you must have seen this…
I always thought Barker was way too talented to be wasting his time with those other snotty California whine-punk kids.
Jason what’s your take on bozzio’s work on the last korn cd?
I saw Bozzio with Fantomas. He was great at the improvised stuff, but not that good at the faster, more metal stuff…
Bozzio only plays on two songs on that (very mediocre) album.
I hate Blink-182 but Travis Barker is a sick drummer.

That about sums it up. The man’s got SKILLZ, son… just hung out with the wrong crowd.
I think an obvious drummer that deserves a mention is Dave Lombardo… Here is a guy who refused to be pegged as just a (damn good) metal drummer and took the time to branch out, play some jazz stuff, work on his fills etc.
Im one of those people who will listen to an album simply because it has Lombardo on it, his drumming is genius - great sound, impressive finesse and speed (when needed) and very creative fills. I even waded through a Testament record just to hear the drums, and thats saying a lot!
j. you might appreciate this story…when i was 17 and some ‘drunk punk’ at the time i was at a yuppie coffee bar (yeah drunk at a coffe bar) getting in a full on loud drunk argument defending lombardo and grip inc. against some other kid who loved the ‘new’ slayer at the time and was going on about how what ever record of theres that was out then saying it was there best drum wise etc. and there was a guy in a suit at the table right across from me reading the paper whom i ignored (just figured he was another yuppie and i was drunk) but i later learned the next day that that guy was dave in town (tulsa,ok) doing some jazz work how random and cool

Haven’t heard it…only his live work as viewed on YouTube…he seems to be doing it in his sleep.
Jupitreas…damn right about Lombardo.
Other drummers to check out:
Vinnie Colaiuta - FZs man in the late 70s of who Zappa said he ‘would play within the polyrythms of my guitar notes during solos’…er, wicked shit! VC is a god amongst drummers.
Ronald Shannon Jackson - old jazz dude, played with Laswell in Last Exit and Albert Ayler in the late 60s. I saw him at a jazz festival in Wales…he played this solo where he just SCREAMED the words to the Richard 3rd Shakespeare speech.
Elvin Jones - John Coltrane’s drummer…scary.
Check their stuff out if you want to hear awesome drumwork.

What is really worth checking out in terms of using live drums for rap/hip-hop music is the album Lombardo did with DJ Spooky called Drums Of Death.
Great stuff!
