Inglorious Basterds

Saw it tonight. There are some brilliant and beautiful scenes and the main villain Nazi is a great character but honestly the violence was a bit much for me. I think I’m getting too old for this sort of thing.

I think I’m done with Tarantino until he starts making gangster films again. I know people like variety and want writers and directors to grow and what not. But, I really like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and it seems to me that gangster movies are Tarantino’s niche.

He has just fallen Flat after Pulp. Natural Born Killers was ok for the first couple of viewings but after that it’s just flat and stale, it has no staying power.
So I’ll be skipping basterds like I did with Kill Bill 2 and tried to do with death proof but got sucked into netflixing it anyway.

I had heard that Tarantino was in the process of writing a script for the Vega Brothers (Vincent Vega from Pulp (John Travolta) and Mr. Blonde aka Vic Vega from Reservoir (Michael Madsen) ) but that was over 10 years ago now and I would think that those 2 cats are well passed the age of doing a prequel to Pulp and Reservoir.
Too bad too cause I think that woulda been a great Idea to put those two guys together. Not a big Travolta fan but he was superb in Pulp, and Madsen is generally always good.

Read a few reviews recently and they’ve been decent.

Surprised by the reactions here. I love a good war movie and am definitely not too old to appreciate a bit of tarantino ultra-violence. I was stoked when I heard about this. Became a dad 2 days ago, so pretty busy, but am hoping to see it on the big skreen whilst the seeing’s good!

Death Proof was disappointing, planet terror was ok, but there musn’t have been enough zombie action for me coz I can barely remember it.

Tarantino is boring.

Such a mid 90’s relic. Hated Kill Bill. And Natural Born Killers was so awful it made my head spin.

As for Brad Pitt…

…I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in a film where he wasn’t overly smug and UTTERLY unconvincing. When it comes to acting skill and ability to lose himself in the given role, I’d place him slightly above Keanu Reeves and slightly below Madonna.

How apt that he married Angelina Jolie - the queen of the ‘faxed in’ performance.

saw it yesterday and really really enjoyed it. definitly classic Tarintino- i.e. seperate characters coming together at one point towards the end for a common, or different goal.

not as violent as I expected it to be. for a war film from him, I’d expect it to be non-stop action, but it wasn’t surprisngly.

I don’t get why people even associate Tarintino with NBK…he wrote the original screenplay, which was then changed quite greatly and he had nothing to do with shooting or directing the film.

Yep, but I wouldn’t put him below Madonna who is probably the worst creature to ever walk the earth.

Reviews I’ve seen for I.B. have been very mixed. A friend of mine saw it and said it was a complete waste of time and money. It’s been getting a bad rap from pc commentators too, saying it’s making light of nazi atoricties and so forth but I wouldn’t listen to those eejits.

Tarantino is manolescent (not a word), he’ll always make the same formulaic, undeveloped, nerdy, self-satisfying flicks for as long as he’s around. It won’t be long before the majority turn against him and declare him a Spielberg.

Yeah I know, I was going to pipe up and mention that too…

To the NBK haters though - I love that movie! Have seen it so many times, it is a “bad” movie in one sense. But then again it was only made in 56 days!
Maybe it was because it was one of the first of those kind of movies I saw, maybe it was my fanboy love for Reznor at the time, who knows, but it still stands as a favorite.
Speaking of Reznor I swear that the song in the last scene of NBK was BURN on the VHS I had years ago… I have 3 different copies of the movie that I accumulated over the years and they all a different song at the end… strange.

Love a lot of Stone’s work though - even stuff like Any Given Sunday which everyone seems to hate. (Yes it’s a bit long, but still good).

Another odd thing… I am the furthest thing from a sports fan but seem to enjoy Grid Iron movies… wierd.

Went to see this with very little expectations. “Death Proof” looked entirely uninteresting to me and I haven’t been too thrilled by the looks of the flicks Tarantino has ‘presented’ in the past. Seemed to me the guy had been coasting for a very long time on past successes.

Wrong!

If you should watch this movie for any reason at all, make it Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa. One of the most captivating performances I’ve seen in a movie and he stole every scene he was in, even if many of them were similar in execution. His lingustic abilities made his character even more chilling.

It’s unfortunate this is being marketed as a summer action movie, for while the action scenes are great, the meat of this story is told through really tense scenes of interrogation and suspense that Tarantino makes fascinating.

Strudel.

You may have just talked me into giving this flick a chance… I’ll be pissed though If I come back bored!

I doubt you’ll be bored, unless you have no patience for lengthy exposition; scenes that are 10 on the hair-raising “OH SHIT!” meter.

This movie was very good. I’ll catch a matinee again in the future.

Have to agree with the positive review. Just got back from seeing it with the Mrs. The violence was a little excessive (she covered her eyes) but that’s to be expected with QT. The prolonged dialogues and the salutes to cheese films of yore (i.e. spagghetti westerns) was cool. Also, got to love seeing Hitler machine gunned in the face by a jewish american soldier.

I loved it! But then again I am a Tarantino Fan girl.

And whoever mentioned NBK as a Tarantino film, pfft I say! I don’t know if you understand the film industry but the script hardly ever stays the same.

I don’t care. I just saw District 9 again. It’s okay. I’ll wait for the rental.
