Actually, that makes perfect sense. That whole release/tour fiasco was a ratfuck from the getgo, so it’s actually quite appropriate that there would be copies all across the EU.
Found the cd on discogs and ordered.
Thanks @realmdemagic for the detailed review which has pushed my excitement levels up even higher.
We’ve really been spoiled lately for classic ministry
Also thanks for the recommendations on LVA projects in this thread, I have one noise abroad track on the excellent Belgian “New wave club classx” series and I love it, it’s exactly what i would want a Gang of 4-Revolting Cocks hybrid to sound like. So it’s good to know where to get the rest of their output.
Re: YGSOAB
Yes I believe there was a audience recording torrented on dime under a false date to get round the ban on official material.
The main difference i remember is some awesome noise guitar by someone (Al?)
Which is kind of mixed down on the official release. It makes it sound more post-punk rather than the more clinical electronic sound of the official album - the official album is still one of my favorite live albums.
I used to be a bit of a puritan about overdubs on live albums but now I just judge it on the results and Al/Paul pulled it off better than megastars with huge budgets managed - I’m thinking of the official 1983 EMI version of Bowies hammersmith 73 gig
Yeah, these past few years have been great for fans of the early stuff. Industrial Accident brought forth a handful of recordings that I had no idea even existed. Just when we think we’ve reached the bottom of the barrel of the early years, more stuff emerges.
I’m really curious to see what’s out there for the Sire era material.
So when was Animal Nation recorded?
I love the cd
We were overdue a new wax trax anthology
I think Animal Nation was recorded either late 1986 or early 1987. It was almost definitely recorded for the Animal Liberation LP.
Enjoyed the cd so much I’m gonna get the cash grab box , just need to find a way round the import duty (I’m in the UK)
I can’t get bored of this thing
Theres not a duff track on here
I gotta say I couldn’t get into the black box
Obviously I liked individual tracks , but there was too much i needed to skip
and some bizarre omissions
So … anyway
the twangy peter hook style guitar/bass on cause we’re in love again
Who’s playing it and what are they playing it on?
That guitar playing has to be Al. The riff kind of reminds me of Let’s Be Happy/Happy Dust.
could it be the same era as happy dust?
Could Happy dust have been backdated to get round the sire contract?
Cwila is 1986 right?
Love the live version of headhunter btw really slamming version
The energy of a live performance with the perfect sound quality of a studio recording
Just noticed this, the audience seem familiar with halloween despite it being unreleased.
Given the audience reaction i wondered why Al bothered to announce it but then I remembered it didn’t come out til 85
Even singing along with “you look so absurd”
I guess ministry had a pretty dedicated live following
Happy Dust is from the Dark Side of the Spoon era, but Let’s Be Happy and Happy Dust have almost the same guitar riff. I think they’re supposed to be related. Al flirted with some of the early stuff on that album, another cool example is bringing back Yvonne Gage (1983/84 backing vocalist) on Eureka Pile.
Yes, Cause We’re In Love again is from 86/87. Post Twitch, but pre-LORAH. Recorded during the same sessions as Apathy and Better Ways.
Agree, that version of Headhunter is tops. Got to see them on that tour, the energy of the show was unreal, can’t wait to see them again.
Apologies for the happy dust/lets be happy confusion
Could lbh be the same session as cwila?
No worries. Let’s be happy is from 1983. While these songs are similar, they are years apart.
Someone (maybe Chris Connelly?) told me once that “I See Red” (which eventually turned into PTP’s “My Favorite Things”) was originally going to be a piece for the Animal Liberation LP. Also, the Cruelty Mix of “Nature of Love” has the “if a man wants to beat his own animal…” samples, so I always figured that was a contender for that comp as well. But it makes a lot of sense that “Animal Nation” would have been intended for it. Seems like Al may have recorded multiple pieces for that…and then never got to use any of them.

There was a live stream of this documentary on Twitch, it’s over now.
Just caught the stream. I wasn’t part of the Wax Trax generation I came up in that dopey numetal generation lmao, but I sure did gravitate towards the Wax Trax stuff in my kiddie years. It was a well told story, nothing I didn’t already know but it was nice to hear some insider stories from some of the 242 guys and Connelly.
After it was over I couldn’t help but wonder wouldn’t it be nice to see a resurgence in industrial music ?
Sadly the scene is in pretty bad shape, seems like one half of it is terrible cyber goober music and the other half just want to mimic the old shit. No one tries to be innovative anymore. Even if they were worth listening to there’s no place for these bands to coalesce and flourish this is a crucial element that Trax provided and helped the subculture grow in the first place
Never managed to get hold of the cash grab box
I finally got my copy of the Blu Ray a few days ago. Lots to love about it including my first listen to hopeless days
But it ended up being the single disc without the bonus material so I’m still on the hunt for either the box at a low price (unlikely). or the double blu ray which is was always the most enticing thing about the cash grab box to me
I gather it has the experimental/ambient album in hi resolution audio- a much better way to hear that kind of thing than on a vinyl you have to keep flipping
What else is on the bonus blu ray disc?
Can anyone direct me to the breakdown
The bonus disc is mainly interview segments with the musicians breaking down some of the various albums/projects. Looks like someone uploaded it to Youtube if you want to check it out:
The experimental/ambient album is not included in the box set. Roland Barker’s piece shows up on the digital version of the soundtrack, but that’s it.
Thanks for that
Nice Interviews, very relaxed
Some of my favourite Al interview footage of all time
This is gold, thanks for sharing! I’m about 20 minutes in and my favorite bit so far is where they talk about Bill reading Moby Dick while drumming in shows. That’s fucking next level skills!
