Did you guys know that Buzz Aldrin punched some guy in the face for saying it was a fake? (not really, he probably punched him for calling him a “liar and a coward”… but still!)

I saw that on tv the other day lol.
It’s 2009 and we’ve never been back to the moon! or anywhere outside earth’s orbit for that matter. I think they retired the Space Shuttle, after what 30 40 years about damn time, lets see what nasa puts out there this time.

too bad they edited it. I’d’ve loved to hear the exchange after
It’s 2009 and we’ve never been back to the moon.
We’ve been back 5 times the last one being in '72. 12 people have walked on the moon!

That douchebag had the nerve to try and have Aldrin charged with assault. Anyone can see that he was provoked. It wasn’t that long ago that what he had said would led to a duel.
I think part of the problem is the whole “been there done that” attitude that we haven’t pushed our space exploration program more. Think about it; after millennia of human progress the short span of time between the first flight and walking on the moon is pretty mind-boggling. It is less than 70 years.
People who think we didn’t go to the moon should be careful about where they walk for they are liable to fall off the horizon. I believe questioning things is healthy, but there is a mountain of evidence and science to support that we went and did not just sent the astronauts up in orbit while Stanley Kubrick made a film on a soundstage. Is it possible? Sure, but the effort and hush money involved would have been far greater than NASA’s budget; plus people like to reveal things on their death bed.

People like to reveal things for attention as well, to “clear their conscience.” Too many people are involved for this to stay quiet for so long. someone would’ve cracked. As far as conspiracy boy…just goes to show, you don’t talk shit to a navy man unless you want a knuckle sandwich!

I saw an episode of Mythbusters that aimed to once and for all dismiss the fake moon landing conspiracy theory. It was crap and was paid for and conducted by NASA. I’ve never really put much credence in the fake moon landing idea but a show like that does no good to prove 1969’s moon adventure’s authenticity. I remember seeing a picture of the 3 lads looking out the window of the pod in what I think was their return only to have Nixon grin in at them from the outside. “AGGHHHHH! Aliens have overrun earth since we left!” is what they might have said. That reminds me I saw ‘Moon’ yesterday, over to the movie thread…
edit: just watched that vid of the punch. Aldrin’s damn right, I would have done the same. That douche was asking for it.
I’m so happy Aldrin did that. Seen it, but fuck he kicks arse for doing that. Watched it again… kudos to you, smrf [;)]
Personally, I believe we have been to the moon…
But I think there’s a good chance the first landing was faked. I mean, the yanks were in competition with the Russians… already got trounced by Gagarin years before… so why not just fake it and get on with the bloody thing? I can understand it from that perspective… but, it could just as well have been faked as it could not have. Noone is really an authority on the matter apart from the people who orchestrated and partook in the entire thing.
Still, I’ve watched docos on it… the whole mission, fabricated or not, didn’t cease to amaze me.
Fuck I just sounded so queer. [:/]
Buzz Aldrin kicks ass.
We should at least have a base on the moon. I’m sure there would be a lot to study, moonquakes (hopefully not too big) etc. Same with Mars, dont tell me Mars is completely empty and boring, who knows maybe one day we can bring it back to life like in Total Recall lol.
[:)]
The shuttle has not been retired yet. We have seven missions left.
I started a thread about this the other day on the puppy forums.
My basic point was in the 60’s we could send a manned flight all the way to the moon, but since then, even with all the technological advances (on msnbc last night they said your cell phone is 60 times more complex then the machinary used in the moon landing), it seems now that every ship we launch either blows up or has something fall off in the process of liftoff.
But I think there’s a good chance the first landing was faked.
I worked for NASA at the Johnson Space Center for 6 years and worked 36 Shuttle missions. I had access to the original Air-to-Ground audio of every mission starting with Alan Shepard’s flight and to every bit of NASA video that was accumulated. Transcripts, interviews with astronauts and flight directors, you name it. I’ve even worked with Buzz on a couple of occasions. Gene Kranz too. (Gene is one of the most thoughtful, articulate people I’ve ever met BTW)
Never saw or heard or spoke with anyone that would lead me to believe it was all a hoax.

Oh pray tell how it was faked and how you know it was funded by NASA. I saw those episodes on you tube as well seemed very credible to me perhaps you saw something I didn’t?

I don’t think the moon has quakes, does it? I thought the only reason the Earth has Quakes was because we have the land masses that sit on tectonic plates that shift as a result of our active core venting heat/pressure and the Moon clearly has no land masses, and a dead core. dead core won’t produce any heat/pressure necessary to quake the planet.
I’m sure I’m wrong somebody correct me! [:)] mooney, wempathy I’m looking at you! Especially you Wempathy in light of the story you told in this thread.

The moon is not in my area of expertise. If you wanted to know something about something else, I might be able to help you out.
Here are some pics of the LCROSS and STS-125 missions that I took:

I wasn’t a NASA geologist although I had a couple of friends who were. One of them was a boyhood friend and we both ended up working at JSC. What are the odds? The other guy and I were in a band together for a couple of years. He would go to Antarctica for months, sometimes camping out on the ice for weeks just to pick up meteorites which are easier to find. If you found a rock on top of the snow…chances are it was a meteorite.
I had no idea about moonquakes until I looked it up. I was a TV guy who worked for the Office of Public Affairs and Communications. Seems that quakes exist on the Moon but for different reasons than they happen on Earth.
I was the Audio Manager for NASA TV in Houston. During missions we created about two dozen audio feeds from several hundred audio sources and distributed them for recording, the Media and for the broadcast feed. We also coordinated the live events both on orbit and from our studios. During non-mission periods we did a lot of interviews and PR type stuff. Coolest job I ever had.

We’ve busted each others balls (well, I guess I did some ovary busting in your case) but I gotta tell you that’s pretty fucking cool that you work at kennedy space center and I’m pretty envious of you in the respect that you have a math brain that lets you work as an engineer at a space agency. I got a D in mechanical drawing in 8th grade and that wasn’t even designing anything that was just copying specs. [;)]

Thanks. We can feel the shock wave and hear it from where I was standing.
Math is just like anything else in life; it’s only difficult the first couple of times. [;)]
Sometimes, I give presentations to students. Man! Things have drastically changed in schools! I really don’t know how you all do it.
See you in September.
Thought I’d share this link with Apollo photos:

Thanks for the link mooney, those are some fantastic pictures. My best friend’s father was one of the crawler crew during the 1960’s, and she has all sorts of crazy badges and other memorabilia framed up. Heck of a guy too, ex-navy man who also use to build his own theremins.
