I’d go as far as saying that lava might be my favorite ministry track of all time. it’s top 3 for sure.
I think both Lava and Brick Windows are great. I like how Brick Windows ends Filth Pig on a somewhat fun note (the lyrics are silly and the beat is nice and jumpy). Lava is quite heavy, although its a little annoying that the riff is ripped off from Alice In Chains’ “Grind”.
Thats an interesting thought about the riff from Lava being snagged from Alice In Chain’s Grind. Both those albums came out with in just a few months of each other (if memory serves me but it’s been a while). It seemed like it took an eternity for Filth Pig to come out too so I would assume the tracks were written over the course of several years but who knows, maybe they were inspired by it. Anyways, I’m a fan of Lava too. It always struck me as an excellent stoner rock track , but I’m a big fan of Electric Wizard too.
yep aic came out 2 or 3 months before filth pig did. i remember them being the 2 big releases that i was excited about my first semester of college (well those and adrenaline by the deftones). i never really noticed the similarity before but i do see it now looking back on it, but overall i think the songs are very different. i always thought filth pig had sorta a melvins vibe to it. i brought that up to paul at the dj event and he said that made sense as they were listening to a lot of melvins back then. i wonder what else they were listening to?
Really? where is the appeal in that song? the whole album is low and heavy and then here comes brick windows that’s all loud and twangy I do like the lyrics but I can’t get over the actual music. I think it ruins the whole mood of the album. But again, to each his own.

The main thing I like is that jagged synth in the beginning. After that, I think Jupitreas is right; it’s got a fun, bumpy groove. After a really slow, heavy album, it’s weird and great to end with one of their most danceable tracks in a long while.
As for Lava being similar to other songs; I’m not familiar with Grind (I’ve never been able to stomach Alice in Chains), but a long time ago somebody pointed out to me that Marilyn Manson pretty much snagged the Lava bassline for one of his songs on Holywood.

Man who knew there was that much support for those two songs?? I sure as hell didn’t…still don’t dig on 'em though!

Well, the riff from Filth Pig is very similar to the one from the Melvins’ “Night Goat” and “Dead Guy” sounds like a compilation of Helmet riffs… So I always assumed quoting riffs was just one of the features of Filth Pig as an album…

That’s a guitar being plugged in and out, repeatedly.
Have to agree, Filth Pig is a dead ringer for Night Goat. I always thought Deadguy sounded like a sludge version of Pantera’s “Walk”.

Huh. Neat-o. I like it even more now, thanks!

Yeah, I hear that. Really sucks too because Filth Pig is top 3 for my fav songs and I was pretty disapointed to hear just how similar they are. I wanted Filth to be completely original. Damn! Although that Harmonica in the middle of it KICKS ASS!!! even cooler, is on the Sphinctour boot, Al opens the Filth Pig song with the harmonica and then does the Solo as well. So, BONUS!!!

I don’t hear that. Although it does sound very Godsmack-ish to me though…at least the intro
