Just last night while riding home
With friends in a big blue car
Policeman fed us rubbish
As if it were Caviar
We told him “Sir, please go away! We’re innocent of crimes!”
He hit me with his black night stick
And all I heard were cries
I’m Falling x8
I asked her for a date one time
She thought it’d be a laugh
I’d take her to a restaurant
And then a turkish bath
I waited at my house that night
For her phone call to come
She’d run off with a wealthy man
Who came from Ireland
Yeah, that’s pretty much the gist of it. And yeah… It’s crap lyrics but we never applauded Al for his lyrical content. Ever. If we were going to do that I’d have to say his best lyrical content was used up pretty much in two albums, being Filth and Dark Side. There are a couple of other good songs throughout the years like Stigmata, Burning Inside, and a few others, but most all of his career Al has been preaching about the state of the government and police brutality, etc. That’s why I can’t understand why people rail against it NOW. He’s been doing it the whole time (minus the soppy Arista-shit years)…

For me, it’s the recent name-dropping and conspicuous (read: lazy) samples that bother me. I’m surprised the new cover album doesn’t include Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire”. I just can’t sing along to lyrics that have “Bin Laden”, “Cheney” or “Bush” in them…too cringe-inducing.

Yeah its all so childishly explicit, like that ‘In the Valley of Elah’ film. Rubbish
i don’t give a fuck about lyrics at all in general, but dammit i appreciate solving a puzzle, which decrypting al’s early mushmouth vocals certainly is.
That sounds pretty damn accurate to me. Though I always figured he was saying “And then up to my pad” and then the final line sounds like “Who came back (or up) with a gun”
But after listening to it on headphones, I really think “from Ireland” is accurate. Anyone (Wempathy etc) know if there’s any truth to that (ie an old flame of Al’s teenage days ran off with an Irishman back in the day)?
Absolutely utter non-sensical lyrics, but I love the song itself…especially the earlier Cure-esque “Alt Mix” version from '80 or so.
Try as I might, I could never quite make out what that “who came from Ireland” line was. That’s the best shot at it I’ve heard so far.
Trouble with trying to figure out a part of a song like this that doesn’t make sense is that the entire song is full of things that don’t make sense. You never know when you’ve figured it out for sure.
Here’s hoping wempathy might shed some light on how accurate these lyrics are…
