I'm falling 1982

I’m Falling. 1982…Does Al play keyboards?

Yes, although I’m not sure if he did on this particular track. I know by 1983 he was playing guitar on it, but apparently not here.
And why does this sound better than the boot I have of this show? Did you clean it up? What did you use?

Not sure where the boot you have of this originated, but mine was straight from the taper back in the late 90s. The only other copy I’ve seen in circulation was a crappy, mp3-sourced version. I haven’t cleaned this up at all, other than taking out a little tape hiss.

Al’s playing a the bass part on a Sequential Circuits Pro-One synth. It’s programmed to spit out 1/8 notes so Al only has to hold his finger down and the notes come out in time, fast and furious. It would otherwise be difficult to play all the notes and sing at the same time.

Roberts is playing the arpeggiated notes and the short lead on a Moog Source. It’s all in real time, no sequencers.

Davis is playing the string parts on a Roland RS-09 ‘String Machine’.

Cool, thanks.
Hey, Wempathy - what do you think of Ministry '82 versus '84? I like them both for different reasons, but obviously didn’t get to see them live at that time; I only heard the results.
I’ll leave 1983 out of it…

Cool, thanks.

The only '84 show I saw was the first one @ Metro. The band seemed unrehearsed I recall. The songs left over from the '83 tour still used the same backing tapes. Fortunately for the band, Stevo and Brad were still holding down the rhythm section.

The shows before 83 had more spontaneity since no backing tapes were used. I guess that was the biggest difference.

Man, that “I’m Falling” sounded great. What else did they play at that show?

  1. Same Old Madness
  2. Revenge
  3. Never Asked For Nothing
  4. (I’m Not An) Effigy
  5. Primental
  6. I’m Falling
  7. Love Change
  8. Overkill
  9. What is the Reason

And according to the tour page here, Cold Life was performed as an encore, but the taper missed it. It’s not on my copy, anyway. Excellent show.

What Is The Reason is actually from the Philadelphia 1983 show. I got this on tape before I could rip tape to cd, so I had a friend do it for me. He appended that song onto this show and one of the other songs from the same show to the Blackouts show I got at the same time. All three are from the same taper.

I’ll correct the tour page as soon as I get a chance.

Aha! Then I must have gotten this from you, or someone else you traded to. Interesting.

Here’s a question: Are the “I’m Falling” tracks mislabeled on Early Trax? I have a bootleg from several years ago, and who ever burned it for me tagged on I’m Falling and Primental, but the I’m Falling that I have on there is the guitar oriented one (4:04), which is labeled as the Alternate Mix on Early Trax. So which version was actually on the Cold Life single?

On a different topic that I don’t feel like starting a thread for, I’ve recently begun to think that Same Old Madness is a reworked version of America. The drum beat is very similar, as are some of the synth parts (in particular, the chorus of SOM seems lifted from America). Am I crazy?

Are the “I’m Falling” tracks mislabeled on Early Trax?

Yes. The one labeled as unreleased is actually the one from the Cold Life 12". The one that sounds like the Cure is the unreleased version.

Yeah, I like the punkier sounding one. I may have to whip out Early Trax now…

That’s weird. The synthier version (the unreleased one) sounds like a better fit with Cold Life. But I do like the guitar version better.
