…and I’m in shock.
But hot damnn if this isn’t some of THE MOST infectious and craftily written pop rock funk I’ve heard since…I don’t know.

As a child I liked RHCP. As an adult I quite dislike them. A murderously overrated band. That first song… what a terrible video. The second song sounds like Madonna, only with more than ten words used.
It appears they have a new guitarist. That is probably a good move as Frusciante was blown way out of proportion and the last I had heard of them with him involved was dull dull dull. I liked when RHCP were obviously being silly. It was nice to have them when I wanted to be silly. But a bunch of 40+ year old kids thinking they’re still it…
I agree. I grew up listening to these guys ( I was a big fan from about 1989 - 1993) but the funk got stale real quick. For the longest time their music flat out sucked - be it sappy, saccharine ballads with new agey, mystical, surfer boy lyrics about finding yrself or bouncey FM Radio fluff. I could well imagine tanned up beefcakes humming their idiot tunes as they waxed their boards.
Gnarly dude. This is like so deep, man. Like, far out.
Made me sick.
But they’ve found something with this new material. There’s some there spark that has been missing for ages. Can’t really put my finger on why I’m finding this new stuff so appealing. It’s breezy and funky and infectious as all hell. They’re just great pop songs.
Can’t explain it any better than that.

best description of RHCP ever.
I hate how you can tell it’s one of their songs from the opening note, before anthony kiedis even opens his yapper.

It’s a nice change of pace. They were just repeating themselves since Californication. Was starting to think they needed a new producer, which they probably still do, but it had to take a band member to leave for them to finally decide to change some things up.
Unfortunately, I’ve only listened to it a couple times. So I’ll be listening to it a lot more today to really base a real opinion. The piano parts are interesting though.
but the funk got stale real quick.
Probably because it was lame cracker ass cracker funk instead of the real deal.
They’ve been “serious” now for 20 years. When they hit the nineties, they got stale.
However, John Frusciante is an immensely talented guitarist. His solo records are way out there. He was smart to take the money and run - Californication is their best selling record.
I like “Higher Ground” and “Give It Away Now” (I think that’s what it’s called). And that’s it.

Hahahaha
I like the bass-line in Suck My Kiss and that’s it.
I like pants made out of stuffed animals . . . and that’s it.
the only decent thing about them is flea. the end.
i dig the chili peppers, always have.
john frusciante is one of the best guitarist we have in pop music today. the guy is out there. the kinda out there like “not having a drivers license or credit card” kinda thing. true rock and roll story of a life too. started in rhcp when he was 18, quit the band, went off did heroin for years. practically died, lost his teeth due to rot, his arms are scared so bad due to his needle heroin addiction some of his tattoos are gone, survived, came back. got back with rhcp, brought them back to a respectful spot, put out 10 solo records.
here he is when he was a junkie in "94

the guy basically came back from the dead.
blood sugar sex magic is in my “top 10” list. for the record, i’m not a big kedis fan.
I’m not rabid about them, but I think RHCP is a great band. I saw them in 86 and again in '92. They became irrellevant to me for a while after Frucsiante left. I just don’t remember anything from this period being that memorable. And it’s not that I’m a fan of Frusciante. I really couldn’t care less. I do vehemently hate Navarro, though.
Anyway, I’ve not listened to the new tracks yet, but I’ll check it out. Personally, I like their slower stuff better than the funkpunk stuff. “Californication”, “Soul to Squeeze” and “Scar Tissue” come to mind.
I do vehemently hate Navarro, though.
He’s very talented imo but One Hot Minute was pretty shitty so I understand the hatred. That album had it’s moments but an album where it goes from heavy to mellow at every song is just confusing. Then again Navarro was a total coke head at the time and Anthony had relapsed on heroin. I could hear the drug influence on that album hella bad.
I don’t dispute Navarro’s talent, though I’m not a fan of any of his bands or output. I just hate him on general principle. He just looks like a giant douche and I want to brickpunch him whenever I see his stupid pretty boy face.
I forgot to mention tho’…I have only listened to one other song on the album.
So, technically, the rest of it may very well suck…
…which kinda puts a dampener on the purpose of this thread.
That Rain Dance video is pretty cool. I had to stare for a while to see that it was actually present day Chilis. I mean, Flea and Anthony are just as energetic and look like they did almost 30 years ago.
I’d heard the Rain Dance track on the radio already and liked it enough. I’m not really digging the other track, but . . . if it comes on the radio it’s probably gonna be better than the song it comes after so I’m okay with it either way.
I like the Chilis the same way I like the Beastie Boys- they’re fun and I don’t take them too seriously.
It’s just light hearted entertainment.
But still, the only decent album in the last 20 years was By The Way.
The rest is so boring. Especially the Dave Navarro years.
I do vehemently hate Navarro, though.
You can add me to this list too I can’t stand that little bitch. Play your guitar and leave your pretend street cred at the door. You’re not hard jefferson darcy!!
