The venue with Edinburgh Castle behind it…
Fred Wesley & The New JBs!!
So lastnight a bunch of us went and saw Fred Wesley & The New JBs here in Edinburgh…and man they were friggin INCREDIBLE!!! I was thinking…wow…why do other bands bother when there’s a band this friggin good!
For those not in the know…Fred Wesley was responsible for the majority of James Browns music…
“Fred Wesley is the trombonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and author known worldwide as one of the architects of funk music. Fred’s work with Godfather of Soul James Brown in the 1970s established him as the world’s funkiest trombone player.
Today he fronts his own jazz-funk band, the New JBs, passes his expertise along to students and younger musicians around the world, and lends his fire to assorted artists across a broad musical spectrum.”
During the set Fred pointed out that their drummer was the best in the world…and man he was fucking insane. The guys name is Bruce Cox and he’s my new hero.
The whole band was deadly and they even had a Scottish dude on keys.
They started the set with the stupidly funky Chameleon (man I LOVE that bass line!) and they played a ton of shit from James Brown’s Funky People Vol 1 & 2 as well as a bunch of other soul/funk/blues & jazz classics.
The last few songs were “Pass The Peas” & “Gimme Some More” and I believe the final song was “Breakin Bread”???
There is a clip of Bruce Cox nailing a drum solo on youtube but sadly the sound is not the best quality. Regardless I’ll post it anyway.

These aren’t from lastnight’s set but they’re all songs that were played during the set and they’re very recent clips…
This is what they opened with lastnight…check the bassline!!
