I Contacted Max Brody

Hey I just thought I should let you guys know I contacted Max Brody on MySpace in hopes of getting more details on Pink Anvil and urging him to get his shit together with Barker and try to release more Pink Anvil stuff (especially New Years Eve Party) I was also curious if he was into the “American Noise Scene” and I asked if he knew about artists like Black Dice and Wolf Eyes because I thought there were some similarities between these groups and the Pink Anvil stuff. He responded with the following:

hey thanks for the message!
i would love to at least get you and everybody a copy of the new years eve show, but i’ve got to talk with barker pretty soon and discuss it. i guess i’ll call him this weekend. its been about 3-4 months since i talked to him last and we have some catching up to do… esp. with the requests i’ve been getting for pink anvil and stuff. i will definately keep you posted.
as for the ‘american noise scene’, i dont really follow it, but only because i’m really not following any scene. in fact i hardly listen to other people’s music at all anymore! i kind of dont have time. making sample-based music means that i have to listen (and not watch)to alot of movies and tv and crap like that to find those tiny snippets of audio. its verry time consuming, and i’m working on 4 albums at the same time right now. i’m either making samples, writing music with them or mixing. besides, everything on the radio, natually, makes me sick.
so maybe you could turn me on to some music that i would actually enjoy. that would be cool! doesn’t happen too often… i saw a band from japan called NMBQ that was cool, actually, the other day during SXSW festival. ever hear of them?? do ‘wolf eyes’, and ‘black dice’ have anything to listen to on myspace?? i’ll have to check it out.
anyhow, lets keep in touch. i’ve always been IN bands, and i’m finally going to start to LEAD, and do all the business and PR and shit that i never did before while in ministry. that shit was just taken care of, you know? so if you know other people interested in this pink anvil shit please send them over to my myspace space!
later,
max

I sent him another message a few weeks later because he never got back to me about whether or not he had contacted Barker in regards to Pink Anvil. He still has not replied to that message but I am hoping he replies at some point. It would be killer to get an exclusive copy of the Pink Anvil stuff (assuming it won’t be officially released in which case I’d just buy it). I’ll keep you guys updated on this if anyone is interested. Please don’t bombard Max Brody with messages on MySpace though because he knows we are interested and I am still waiting for his reply so messaging him more would do nothing to help the cause.

Yeah.
Well actually, according to the interview if anyone wants more Barker/Anvil, you should email him at the stackedrecords.com site, or contacting him through Myspace. He himself is already aware of the interest, but he’s gotta convince Barker, y’know? I don’t think he’ll mind if all you guys write in to him about it, just don’t bitch him or out, be nice, etc…

As far as the Pink Anvil material goes, if it does get released he will probably give us the ok to post an mp3 every week or so on here… he agreed to that with me on the phone (even though I didn’t type it). I am not shocked about the inability to get ahold of Paul… he really has been working on a lot… Afra hasn’t talked to him in probably longer than 3 months, actually.

It would be cool to hear that, they have only done two shows correct? The halloween and the NYE?
I wonder if it was the same material?

No, I think it was all new material…they’re kind of an improvisational group, going into a performance with only a sketch idea of the songs, building on their ideas as they go. Pretty cool, if you ask me. Check the Max Brody interview here for more info (thanks JLW!).

What has barker been up to?

What has barker been up to?

Writing pulp crime novels under the alias J.D Cornelius.

Haw.

NYE and Halloween were two different sets of material. There is a third album that was going to be fleshed out, but never happened because Barker moved to L.A. It was not live, either, rather it was studio.

Paul’s mostly been performing/producing with other bands these days, as well as working on his own solo stuff.

Yo I got a reply from Brody…here’s what he said:

BEGINNING

hey! yeah i’m still here, thanks!
yes, i did have a couple of chances to talk with paul on the phone a couple of times recently, but our conversations had more to do with software and computer issues than with our music, per se. i feel confident that he wants to keep doing something with pink anvil and we discussed putting up a pink anvil website or maybe just a myspace space or something…both of us are really busy, though. it sucks wanting to do something and hardly ever having time to do it.

as for my own stuff, i’m real happy with what i’ve been getting done, but i’m starting to think that theres no point to finishing a whole album…do people even buy ‘albums’ any more?? or just downloads of particular songs? i’ve got a lot of songs that are NEARLY done, but to get them ALL done at once will take me longer that i care to take. (what with that little 2 year old distraction runnin around the house). so i’m starting to think that i’ll post tunes as i finish them. i’m trying to start a website with my friend brett, but that, too, is taking just sooo looong…its harsh! so i may post a couple of tunes on myspace soon, along with some pictures you may find interesting…
also, areola 51 is almost finished with a new short album! it just needs a couple tweeks, mixing and mastering.

sorry that its taking so long! i hate it!

as for getting in touch with barker, i don’t know the way he’d prefer people to do that. i know he’s trying to get a website together for himself, or, rather, spurburn, as well as one for the other projects that he’s been working on… including pink anvil. i’ll ask him next time we talk what i can tell people that want to contact him.

END

Yeah so there you have it folks! Translation: this shit will never see the light of day…

Haha just kidding (kind of) but I really hope they get on the ball with this. Fuck, I would even make the damn MySpace page for them it would only take an hour of my time! I hate how musicians get involved in an interesting project like Pink Anvil and people get excited about it and then next thing you know they’ve moved on to something else.

I mean the Anvil CD came out in 2003 but it’s just now starting to generatge a buzz (several unexpected people I’ve met have either seen them live at the New Years gig or are fans of the album). I really wish they had stuck with this bad boy I think they could have really made a name for themselves outside of Ministry…

Yeah, the ONLY reason I know of Pink Anvil is because of Ministry. I personally think it’s brilliant, but it obviously wouldn’t appeal to a lot of fans of what Paul and Max are known for. With some simple promotion amongst the right crowds, I can see that first cd absolutely taking off. It’s cool that they’re both doing various things, but I’m starting to see that typical artist handicap - not being able to finish something once it’s begun. Take your time with it, boys, and don’t heap so much on your damn plates at one time! Do it for the fans.
