It’s very rare that I see/read interviews with musicians and don’t cringe at what they are saying. Paul always seems down to earth and devoid of pretension in interviews. There’s nothing in that interview that you can turn against him. The only “message” he gives, after natural reluctance and putting forth only out of presumed politeness, is to get up off your arse and do something. Simple but important. Compare that with the pseudo politics + intellectualising and narcissism of other artists.

Anyway I think I know how Paul and others might have felt having to put up with Al. I’ve a “friend” who I’ve worked with on a number of things over the past few years. He’s always at the front of everything and knows everybody and assumes full credit for everything he’s “worked” on, while myself and some others have had to listen to his occasional paranoid + neurotic diatribes while we did the actual work! I tend to keep our business to a minimum these days. The sad thing is some others, who know what he can be like, still hold him in high regard and would swing with him in the event of a fallout or whatever. I put it down to peer issues and his ubiquity at events. He hasn’t bastardised ‘What A Wonderful World’ to my knowledge though so I’ll grant him that.
Funny about that sp.ed… I recall reading somewhere that Paul used to have to sort Al’s shit out to the extent of picking his daughter up from school because mum and dad were too fucked off their faces to do so. Sad.

In the past year, I’ve had 4 mates I regarded as brothers completely stab me in the back in the worst ways possible. I’ve really got wonder what it is with people… there just seems to be this prevailing narcissistic personality which dictates that people/friends/whatever are just a means to an end… that end being their personal gratification. Sorry if I sound like a bitch for bringing this up, but I thought it’d serve well as an example to make my point.
The irony is… at the same time, these sort of people tend to make friends easily, love the whole social networking bullshit… which is probably half the reason they consider people so dispensable. Sad.

I’ve never heard that particular rumour that you mentioned, but there was a story going around that Al had to go down to his daughter’s school and straighten out her teacher who was apparently under the impression that Al was raising his family in a hippie sex/drug cult similar to Charles Manson’s.

I’ve had good friends implicate me in serious crimes just to prove they weren’t to be fucked with. I’ve had best mates treat me like complete shit in front of people they were trying to impress. And later, when I confronted these ‘mates’ about the way I was being treated, I was told it was all in my imagination.
Life is only just beginning. Ride that downward spiral my friend. Ride it!

Green Death, I’m not going to waste time in rebutting your point with bullshit rhetoric, and will basically take that criticism like a man.
However, I thought I should mention ‘steve’ and I have a bit of a history.
When I first joined pissarmy, this chap decided to rebutt any of my comments by referring to me as ‘homo teenager’. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly wasn’t remotely upset, and actually found it funny that this was the way a grown man got his kicks… but the thing is, it came from nowhere and I did nothing to bring it on, and so it just got annoying after a while.
I’m inclined to agree with mick, and I honestly don’t think steve is a ‘helpless’ as he’s leading us to believe. Personally, I think the whole thing is a ploy for attention or to win back people he put offside, and I posted it here because… well, it’s a pretty fucking hilarious indictment not only of the pathology behind such a post, but also on the state of the pissarmy.

Al’s interviews are better when they’re with fan/indie press. With the mainstream music press it’s always the same stock answers. He branches out more when he knows the interviewer wasn’t just assigned the job by his editor.
