how to identify the correct version of side trax?

please help on this one. i want to order it online through some local stores that import the releases from europe and usa, but i don’t want to go through the hassle of exchanging mono version, so just in case i want some tips on identifying the correct stereo reptint. maybe different catalogue/serial numbers/barcodes or whatever.

oh yeah, i also have houses of the mole “v2” (with bloodlines as track 13) but i’d like to have the orignial album version with carmina burana just for the fuck of it, any help how to differ them apart?

thanks.

Maybe the mono version will be a collectors’ item because of it’s brief production run. I don’t think there is anything to differentiate from the stereo one. I kept a special CD-R mono version which I processed with some Lexicon digital effects to simulate stereo.

Sometimes, I actually like listening to that one instead of the official stereo one.

I still have the mono version after getting mine exchanged, so maybe I can check the disc for differences once I’m at home.

I don’t think there’s any differentiation at all on the cover, though, so unless you can actually open the product and look at the disc before you buy, you’re probably out of luck on that. Those of us who got the exchange got just the new disc, no case beyond what we had already.

What is this? “V2” and Carmina Burana?

The original version of “Houses” had an intro on No W featuring the chorus from “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, but there were legal issues with it, apparently. This is why Al remixed it on Rantology with the generic chorus, to approximate what he had originally done. I somehow lucked out and got the “correct” version of Houses and the stereo “Side Trax”, so I’m a lucky bunny…if anyone is interested and doesn’t feel like re-purchasing either of these titles, however, they’re both up for sharing on Soulseek. The re-pressed “Houses” goes right into the guitar on No W, and it sounds just, wrong, somehow. Anyway, I’m rather fond of Carmina Burana to begin with, so I loved hearing that as a Ministry intro…

heh on the contrary i like the burana-less version. at least it has solo instead of repeating the intro voices. just wanted to get it…

Okay, I just dug my mono copy out…

On the printed side, the CDs are both exactly the same. Same catalog # (RCD 10690).

On the disc side, though, here’s what the text around the ring says:

A4 P2 310690-2 01 (original mono version)
A4 P2 310690-2 RE-1 01 (fixed stereo version)

So there you have it, that’s how to tell them apart. I assume that the “RE-1” means something like “reissue 1”.

thanks alot!

Umm… I just had a look at my cds… My HOTM cd is the original one… And so are all the copies of all my mates. I think it is entirely possible you can still get that copy in the shops here in Australia.

And I looked at my Side Traks cd and on the cd side I have written “deluxe RCD10690 01”

Any idea what version that is?

the one that has R 01 is the corrected stereo version instead of originally released erroneous mono

Rip it and open it in Audacity (or any other wave editor). Zoom in so individual peaks are clear and it’s pretty obvious whether it’s stereo or not.
