High On Fire

I think they are one of the most interesting ‘heavy’ bands out there nowadays. Mastodon and Neurosis sound like wimps next to their stuff and they have a knack for including great tribal rhythms in their otherwise super-heavy sound… I recently heard their new album, which leaked a week or so ago. Brilliant stuff, I tell you…

I liked the first release…I should check them out again.

I’m not a fan really but i will check them out in Detroit in october just to see Mono open up for them. maybe i will like High better live than on cd.

this happens to me often. not likingsometing until i hear it live, then i’m all over it.

newest skinny puppy cd is a prime example.

Well, those guys have balls… (as did Ministry with Filth Pig) As Sleep, they got signed to a major label and what they submitted was a 50 minute long song with the same riff over and over again, lol. Not surprisingly, the label dropped them immediately hahaha. All is well that ends well since High On Fire is absolutely genius stuff… Who knew you could still be innovative with those Sabbath riffs?

The magic words, Sabbath riffs, I’m gonna check them out [:P]

Any particular songs that can be recommended?

Well, as I said, I really dig their latest album “Death Is Communion”. I dont have any other albums on me at the moment so I cant remember what songs are worth recommending but from the new album, I’d listen to the title song for those Sabbath riffs in conjunction with a tribal rhythm and to “Turk” as the song that Mastodon always hoped they’d record.

I was drawn to them as a HUGE Sabbath fan.

Saw them live four years ago with Mastodon… I’m not very impressed by High On Fire actually, not very original and sometimes a bit boring for my taste. But I know only their two first releases…

I’m a lot more into Matt Pike’s previous band Sleep, at least their last release Jerusalem (or Dopesmoker since it’s actually the same song) or the current band of his old bandmates OM:
“Confined to only drums, bass, and vocals, Cisneros and Hakius bolt down their rhythms and replace the loose structuring of Sleep with tighter arrangements and heavier reliance on minimal repetition. The name “Om” is thus fitting, pimped from its Buddhist and Hinduism meanings to imply the fundamental essence of stoner rock: the bass groove, the crashing cymbals and booming percussion…”

High On Fire doesn’t do it for me.
I’ve got the OM/Current 93 cd though, and it’s pretty cool.

I like Neurosis “souls at Zero”. Never Heard Mastadon though.
