Man, life is good. Just scored a free pass to the early-bird screening on Tuesday at the Lennox. This thing should destroy. Great well-written review by Moriarty over at AIC along with the Dark Knight - which sounds massive.
Any HB or Mignola fans here?
My favorite story - I just re-read around 2AM this morning is The Corpse.
Man, talk about some seriously eerie artwork.
Excellent use of black, shapes, forms, and contrast.
Hellboy is awesome. Love the newest TPB, despite the fact that Mignola didn’t draw it himself. Wasn’t a huge fan of the first film, but this one’s supposedly better…
Huge Hellboy and Mignola fan, and Del Toro is rapidly becoming one of my favorite directors. This film looks spot on, and even more detailed than the first.
One of the conceptual artists is Wayne Douglas Barlowe, who has long been one of favorite sf/fantasy artists. His designs are like living Dali paintings, very organic and well thought out. Check out Barlowe’s Inferno, Expedition, or any of his alien art books and you’ll see what I mean.
Hey give me some credit! I had never seen the original and the remake was good (i guess it was, i have nothing to compare it too)
but hand cock looks stupid. I have no intentions of seeing the fresh prince be a mal content super hero.
BTW saw the strangers last night and thought it was good. I agree with your review (if i remember it correctly) that the mood was set very nicely with ok acting.
another BTW
did anyone know that the movie was inspired by the keddie murders in northern ca.? http://www.cabin28.com/
ashame.

I might see this thang. Might not. Liked the first movie, dug what little of the cartoon I caught a while back, and am woefully ignorant of the comics.
Also, grmpysmrf… “Hand-Cock.” Dude. Copyright that shit before it’s turned into a skin-flick parody.

I’m pretty sure it probably is in production lol. porn is usually pretty quick in capitlizing on shit like that. thanks for the positive nod though.

jizzy: I think the cathardic moment was supposed to be where the mormons found tyler and she screams. I think that means she was supposed to live, cause who called 911 in the beginning? Also how did she call? all of the phones were destroyed or rendered useless… Glad I didn’t skip this one though. They also made it seem like the blondie was new to what the guy and the black haired girl were doing cause black haired girl said “the next one will be easier” so perhaps there will a 2… on one hand I think that would be ok to explain more about these villians but on the other hand the lack of info I think gives the flick it’s mystique we generally never really know why fucked up people do shit like that in in real life
Sadly, it seemed like the kinda film black metal fans in Europe ( or god forbid here ) would jerk off too.
well the dude in the mask certainly seemed to look like a slipknot fan
I used to collect shitloads of comics when i was a youngster. I had Punisher No1 as well as War Journal No1. I also had numerous other number 1’s including the number 1 of Ninja Turtles that was black & white if i remember? I can’t actually remember what happened to them? I think i gave them away as i can’t remember selling them?
Yeah the first ten issues or so are good, issue one owing a lot as Jizz said to Miller’s Ronin. The one shots are pretty cool, I especially like the Donatello Kirby tribute.
That was a cool time in comics the black and white explosion was in full force, and the majors had begun to experiment with edgier title imprints. Marvel’s Epic line was pretty good for sci-fi, and DC had the Frank Miller, and Alan Moore stuff. Although I have to say the success of the TMNT let loose a slew of copycats that grew increasingly ludicrous and bizarre. Pre-Teen Dirty Gene Kung-Fu Kangaroos? My fav was Geriatric Gangreen Jui-Jitsu Gerbils [:)]
The Turtles being turned into a kids show was not that surprising, but other shows baffled me at the time anyone remember the Toxic Avenger? Or the Killer Tomatoes?

The Donatello one-shot was OK. It was a Jack Kirby tribute.
I really enjoyed the B&W indie boom at the time. Of course, I was 11 so I thought the idea of Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters was hilarious.
I’ve been thinking about the film on the way home, but somehow I seem not not to be able to write a real review of it yet. Words, they escape me! So, let me just throw a few adjectives or influences that I think describe HB 2 The Golden Army in some way: boundless, one-of-a-kind, mournful, northern, spellbinding, monumental, Moebius, Elric, Mortiis, Bladerunner, Tolkien, Ghostbusters, The Dark Crystal, Star Wars, …argh!!!
I am going to be in the minority that didn’t like this. I saw it Sunday and was pretty disappointed. I really enjoyed the first one, but this one was sooooooo goddamn unbelievable (I know the entire story is). Fairies and goblins and hellboy throwing babies in the air, I was laughing through lots of it and not because it meant to be funny. Maybe it’s because I never read the comics, but I really liked the secrecy and believability of the first one. I know the first one wasn’t exactly realistic, but it wasn’t just a fairy tale. I will say that it LOOKED fantastic, but I was let down by the kid stuff. Pan’s Labyrinth was WAY better.
I actually quite enjoyed the film myself, and I’ve been a longtime fan of Hellboy and Mignola long before the first film. At the same time I could see how the purist Hellboy comic book fans would not like the movie. Some things that annoyed me a little, but was still able to get over and enjoy the movie:
a) The Hellboy/Liz relationship (Why do Hollywood movies always need a damn love story, they did this w/Batman Begins too!)
b) Abe Sapien is such a fucking pussy in the movies
c) It seemed as though the film took place in the Pan’s Labyrinth Universe rather than the Mignola universe.
So yeah, Mignola fans that want to see an adaption that is faithful to the comics like Sin City was will be dissapointed for sure.
I pretty much accepted from the beginning that the films were a bastardization of the comics and are to a large degree Del Toro’s interpretation, and I think they are fun and enjoyable in their own right.
Oh BTW, call me a loser, say I have no taste or whatever but after being dragged out to see Hancock I gotta say it was a pretty decent popcorn flick.
