whats the deal with metal festivals in USA these days? They are huge in Europe (particularly Hellfest, I urge all of you to check out their insane lineup) but I hear they are not a big thing in America at the moment.
I was actually thinking about checking out Maiden when they come through Phoenix next month. I’ve never seen them, and heard they still sound good live. I’m not much of a metalhead, but I’ve always liked their 80’s output, with Somewhere In Time being my favorite.

Festivals, as of late in the US, are dismal compared to the Europeans. I think a lot of the initiative that drives festivals here is purely the money aspect, which limits a lot. Not bashing US festivals but when you see what Lollapalooza has become. Nin - wtf??? Why people still like him and want to see him live is way beyond me. Been over 10 years since he’s put out something decent besides a few tracks here and there. If only most bands had a lot of mercy from fans if they did that - Ministry included.
Actually, I think festivals was a US thing - in other words, like with electronic music, it made it to Europe, they made it better and then exported it back to the US. Same can be said for many genres of music - even metal.
I’m tempted to go for this. From the press release about Maiden’s appearance:
This tour revisits the band’s history by focusing almost entirely on their classic 80’s period in both choice of songs played and the stage set, which is based around the legendary Egyptian production of the 1985 “Powerslave Tour” as portrayed on the “Live After Death” DVD. This is arguably the most elaborate and spectacular show the band has ever presented.
IRON MAIDEN - meh
DETHKLOK - really…are we still pretending this is funny?
TYPE O NEGATIVE - booyah.
MASTODON - booyah.
HAMMERFALL - i hope they die in a fire.
HATEBREED - LAME!
OVERKILL - who?
3 INCHES OF BLOOD - go away.
SYMPHONY X - dull.
UNEXPECT - who?
LAUREN HARRIS - who?
Sunday, June 22:
MÖTLEY CRÜE - oh sweet jesus…the comedy!
THREE DAYS GRACE - weaksauce.
ANTHRAX - umm…nah.
SHADOWS FALL - meh.
DROWNING POOL - meh.
PRIESTESS - who?
You think they need to call it the balding tour? or is the tour sponsored by rogain? I like a few of the bands but I bet the type of nostalgia won’t be worth the ticket price. I liked Type O’ only for bloody kisses. I saw them open for Danzig oct 31, 1994. they played damn near every song off of the bloody kisses CD. I was really impressed. they sounded great. I’m sure these bands probably still have a shitload of decent music in them but the new “packaging” probably isn’t worth the ticket to the show, and they would probably do well to continue their ass kicking rockness as studio bands only. Attack of the Killer B’s" is a great album but I don’t need to see Scott Ian and Company perform any shit live. I’d like to remember my metal heros the way they were: all 20 somethinged out in the prime of life and not all way over the hill and fat. Slash was ok to see cause he looks the same and it was kind of hard to see Al but he wasn’t as bad as he could’ve been but most of those hair metal guys have not faired well over the years. I think they have become what those “Woodstock” guys were to the 80’s and just really pathetic to look at. I just see Vince Niel and “Randy of the redwoods” as the same guy really, just different time periods!

Don’t think I’d blow money on Maiden again. Bruce gives metal a bad name. His outbusts at Ozfest years ago were less than noble and a true manifestation of his dumb-ass me-first arrogance. “We are fucken Maiden, therefore we are better than you.”
I think that was all bull - what happened at Ozfest. I think it was a marketing ploy by Sharon to get some excitement going. Totally. I call total bullshit on that.
Bruce is also not an arrogant guy at all.
I think lots of people will go - here, Maiden is playing at an Arena that nin, for example, also played at, and have sold a lot of the tickets. What’s cool is that Anthrax is playing the Double Door here in Chicago - the bar only hold about a 150 people. That’ll be insane.
Can’t stand Sara Mclacalaca’s aspca commercial with all of those sad looking homeless animals that have been beaten or dumped… I hate it cause I know what she’s trying to do with her, “arms of an angel” song with the sad animal montage and because I know she’s trying to pull on my hearstrings it shouldn’t work BUT IT DOES… fuckin’ bitch!
