So, I dusted off tonight we murder today and it sounds like Trent lifted the bass line (or at least some of it) from this track for Head like a hole.
I’m listening to Tonight and i find myself humming the lyrics… "Bow down before the one you serve… " and I anybody else notice this before?
I thought HLAH come out years before TWM?
I was under the impression that TWM was from the mid 80’s. came out of the PTP sessions… I could be wrong.
“Tonight We Murder” was originally the B-side of the “Stigmata” 12", released in February 1988. It’s likely that Trent had heard it before he wrote “Head Like A Hole” (which didn’t come out until 1989, and is not part of the setlist for the earliest NIN shows in October 1988).
A lot of people did hear “Tonight We Murder” for the first time on the Demon Knight soundtrack, released in 1994, which could be behind the impression that it came after “Head Like A Hole.”
TWM was recorded in 1987. I think the bass/drum section section was recycled from Ministry’s 84 track “Do You Even Like It”. Or at least those parts sound pretty damn similar.
As far as NIN, there are a couple of the same notes in the basslines, but to my ears TWM and HLAH sound completely different.
Different.
What Trent did probably lift from Ministry’s “You Know What You Are” is the bass synth tone and vibe for his song “Last” on Broken EP. Check out at 1:40 and then put on Ministry’s song.
NIN’s “Somewhat Damaged” could be specifically influenced by the guitar sound in Ministry’s “Deity.”
