Al Jourgensen: “I have to revise that statement. It’s not in the top 50 great albums of all time because that covers a lot of ground, but I think it’s in the top 50 STONER albums of all time! There’s a difference. I’ll definitely stack my chips against any other top fifty stoner albums. This is like stoner thrash. That’s how we did this record. I’m used to doing records either drunk, sober, on MDA, on heroin, on coke. This time, I just did it on pot, so it’s a total stoner-thrash album. The same thing with Buck Satan: That’s a stoner country album. Because of my back problems, I have legal marijuana. I’m totally stoned talking to you right now.”
I bet a lot of people who listened to the album stream and hated it were sober. Maybe that’s the wrong way to approach an album like this. Personally I have not heard it drunk yet. I had two beers before listening to it last night, but I still got bored and ended up doing the dishes.
Yeah, I’m not going to get loaded just so I can “get” the album. And the next time I do get loaded, I’m almost positive that listening to that album, or any album, I highly doubt that would be on my list of priorities.
But I’m sure a lot of anything will eventually sound good when you’re messed up. No thanks.
I have, it’s too bad cause there are some pretty cool things on this record. The use of samples and delay on the samples is surprisingly refreshing. Kleptocracy is a good example of a lot of songs off the record, they have really cool parts but then the song recoils to typical nu Ministry. As for Al, I don’t think he’s on anything but weed, in the 99% vid it looks like he’s gained back a lot of the weight he lost.
thank you for pinpointing the problem, industwetrust. the issue isn’t necessarily what the listeners are taking, but what al should be using for his pain. clearly we all know marijuana is largely a farce for medicinal purposes. thats just a ruse its proponents use for legalization. moreover, someone under the influence of pot probably feels the sound they make or hear is stellarly awesome - a quality characterized by als grandiose description of relapse, more so than it actually is.
my recommendation would be for al to take real opioids for his pain. I’m sure he’ll discover the delusional drugged delirium will fade, and he will make more listenable records.
I’m usually sleep deprived. Does that count. High ≥ delusional, illogical thinking. If so, album’s still ridiculously bad. I still like Double Tap, and 99% is musically so-so, and not terrible. Plus, some of the stuff, scattered remnants of tolerable tidbits (samples and obscured synthesis, etc) . As a whole, it’s probably still terrible. And if I were to hear this while trashed, I’d probably be far more harsh than my sober opinion.
This album sucks pretty bad…There are a few parts of songs that sound cool…but at the end of the day worst Ministry album ever!!! best part of the whole album in my opinion is the chorus to Bloodlust…And being high wont help the album sound any better!!!
There is a lot of so-called “stoner metal” or “stoner rock” albums that are really good. But guess what? If they’re good they’re also good when you’re not stoned.
i don’t like relapse, although i’ve not listened to it stoned. maybe i’ll give it a go tonight… but maybe not. probably not. i’m seeing electric wizard on saturday, an actual stoner type band, and nothing at all like ministry. i’ve got to say that al’s comment that relapse is stoner music is quite odd.
