This lost track has finally been uncovered. Check it out here:

This one is a precursor to the All Day/Halloween sound and comes from the 9/12/83 Palladium show in LA.

Appropriate that the still used for this video is from that terrible movie Xanadu. This track could be on the soundtrack.

Who were they opening up for on that tour that they got to play a place the size of the Palladium?

Madness

Wow, that’s a crazy bill!

Wow…thanks for this!

It borrows pretty heavily from a Special Affect song. So there’s that…

Which one? It’ll be cool to compare the two.

Cool

It’s not bad, I like the WS-era feel, but it sounds to me like a half-baked song that they must have abandoned after testing it on the road. I got bored towards the end of it! Still, I love seeing this early, unreleased material see the light of day.

1002

Nice!
Just when you think you’ve heard it all.

My bad, it was actually a Drowning Craze song called He Was. It was on the Groovie 13 compilation and according to the tracklist was recorded for John Peel on 2/2/82.

Franke was in the room when the song was being written/demoed.

Is there a full show available in this quality? It’s exceptionally good for “bootleg” of that era.

Hehe, check out some scream at 6:13 “I THINK YOU’RE GREAAAAAAAAAT!” [laugh]

It’s quite likely.

The full show exists, recorded for an FM broadcast. I think only the Madness set made it the airwaves though. Here’s what that show contains: http://prongs.org/ministry/9-12-83-Hollywood

Someone discovered it in their recording archive and forwarded it up the chain. It’s been a good few years now, not sure why it hasn’t been released yet.

Parts of it have been bootlegged before. Here’s Work For Love, which is from the same show (the youtube video is mislabled as being from Chicago)

Just listened to He Was, very interesting. It sounds like he combined that song with some new ideas. The chorus of Hardman is very similar to Halloween, and the rhythm section sounds like All Day. So “Hardman” is sort of a cover, a demo and it’s own thing, all at the same time. Very cool.

Thanks for this too. [/reply]

If you still have any of the old Songs Of The Week (RIP), a few of the last ones were from this show. Sadly that version of the show was on cassette and someone had taped over much of it.

Thank you. This is outstanding. I was kind of bummed there were no 2018 Record Store Day surprises like we had in 2015, so this is most excellent!!!

Me too. I actually haven’t been out to RSD since. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for a Sire box set in the same style. There’s still some unheard content out there.
