Hank III

So Hank Williams III put out three new albums today. One is a double disc of his normal country stuff, one is a new stoner/doom metal project called Attention Deficit Domination, and then there’s 3 Bar Ranch/Cattle Callin’. Which is… different…

Buck Satan’s gonna feel light and fluffy compared to this.

I’m looking forward to hearing his new country stuff (I’ve always liked his country albums). I really don’t care about his ASSJACK stuff or anything, though.

And that “cattlecore” crap . . . I listened to some samples a few weeks back. Totally unlistenable garbage.

a new stoner/doom metal project called Attention Deficit Domination

I just took a few samples of this. It’s pretty bad also.

ADD suffers from a common problem in doom/stoner metal: terrible vocals.

The 3 Bar Ranch stuff is what it is. It’s still more interesting than Lame Satan.

Don’t listen to his country stuff. I hate country but I might give Hank’s stuff a try.

It’s alright. It doesn’t sound good though. Like it was recorded from behind a stack of quilts or something.
I like the zydeco song with Tom Waits.

To be honest, I probably missed his last one or two country offerings too. But I’m a HUGE fan of both “Broke, Lovesick and Drifting” and “Straight to Hell” (the actual song album, not the extra disc of 2 hours of train whistles or whatever that crap was).

You’ll probably like the first part of the country album (the “Ghost to a Ghost” part). The “Gutter Town” part (with the Tom Waits guest appearance) is some sort of bizarre zydeco concept album, with actual songs interspersed with weirdo spoken interludes.

Yeah, you’re probably right on the money. Even despite that fact that “concept” anything usually equals poop, I fail to understand the supposed genius of Tom Waits. I know if I want to be cool I’m supposed to think the guy is the musical messiah or something, but it just does nothing for me and his “fans” just seem like a bunch of pretentious wankers.

I’ll still give it a sample though (gonna have to scour YouTube tonight).

I like tom waits’ whiskey drenched(VOICE) but I wouldn’t call him a messiah either. I’m only a passing fan.

Tom Waits was born cooler than any of us will ever be.
That said, I liked him better before he started writing songs with his wife. Much like Sasha Konietzko. Guys - don’t do that shit.

I actually think Waits is the only dude who got better when his wife got in on the game. Kathleen sounds pretty cool. Swordfishtrombones was the first with her stamp on it and that’s one of his best.

He has a new one out next month also.

though i am an ‘up my own ass bastard’ about a lot of my music, Tom, i think, is a fucking genius. i am a huge fan of american folk/vaudeville/broken americana/and so on, and i think his work and vision is the perfect amalgam of all of that. you should check out the song ‘dirt in the ground’ and ‘rains on me’ on youtube… brilliant. and the song ‘time’ actually makes me cry when i hear it…

he speaks with a grave honesty, much akin to the AMERICAN johnny cash era albums. there is always a… sense of gravity and sincerity in what he says, what he plays, and how he seeps into each song.

though i can dig you not feelin him completely.

I didn’t get Tom Waits at first either. I liked his acting (he’s hilarious in Mystery Men) but I figured his musical persona was just a piano playing Foster Brooks.

But that’s only because I’d never really listened…

Thanks, Rusty. I’ll try those tracks and let you know if I feel differently.

he is a killer actor. in Dracula he was really strong, Mystery Men is a really golden piece of comedy, and he was even good in Wristcutters (yeah, i know, my jeans just shrunk and i suddenly became a hippster… but still… its a pretty good movie!)

The lyrics on that one were pure magic. I like that song because he’s not overly doing that stupid whiskey burnt goblin voice that gets old in 30 seconds.

I tried the other ones you suggested also. The “Dirt” song was actually quite nice. The other one (“Rain”) I tuned out pretty fast as it was pretty typical of what I don’t like about Tom Waits (which I guess is supposedly what makes him awesome).

I’ll look up some of those acting parts he did, though. I saw (before the nazis took it down) his piece with Iggy Pop from “Coffee and Cigarettes” and it is one of my favorite short film pieces of all time. Just awesome (both of them). If you’ve not seen it, try to find it.

he is totally class in that movie. as is iggy. best segment of that whole film. easy.

yeah, if you dont liek the speakeasy sad barroom dance of some of his stuff thats very fair… i would check the album rain dogs though, there are some real harsh and touching moments on that one…

you know he’s the second singer in the middle of Tommy the Cat by Primus.

No. I’ll have to dig that up. I’ve not listened to it in ages.
