Heh.Illegals doing Superjoint…
First off, he deserved to have his ass kicked just for that stupid hat alone. He looked like the guy from that New Radicals one-hit-wonder that made one of my all-time most hated songs. So there’s that.
But also, Fat Mike had been telling everyone earlier to ease up on throwing stuff and whatnot because he had a neck injury. Well, drunken boob not only storms the stage, but he does it very sloppily and bumps into Mike while he’s playing.
Mike didn’t give the dude a Rodney King beatdown. He gave him a very quick 1-2 combo. And mad props to Mike . . . he didn’t skip a beat and just kept on playing. Total warrior. And I don’t even like NOFX.
I thought he actually showed a lot of restraint.
Look, there are rules when you go to shows. There is YOUR space and there is OTHER people’s space. If you want to try and storm the stage, you do so at your own peril. If you want to do it old school style – get up fast, and then run right off with a flying leap and try to look awesome doing it. This guy failed on all accounts. If you get stopped and/or beaten in your pursuits, that’s no one’s fault but yours.
I often jump rails and fences and such to get into the pit even though I don’t have tickets. Sometimes I get some bodywork done by the guards, but I have no animosity to them. I know exactly what I’m in for. 9 times out of 10, my ninja moves serve me well, but those other times I may get a tossing or a fist to the ribs . . . all part of the course.
Sorry, let me also add . . . . being up on stage is a JOB. And, guess what? It’s kind of dangerous. There’s cables and equipment and things to trip on and fall off of. And when you’re performing, you have lights in your face and speakers blaring in your ears, and you’re typically focused on one thing . . . . performing.
Add flying shoes, bottles, spit, and a myriad of other attacks to the mix and you’re up there with TWO goals: performing and surviving. 10 years ago some dingbat stormed the stage at a DamagePlan concert and shot people, killing Dimebag. Don’t think that any performer is not aware that s/he is a sitting duck on that lighted stage.
So when some clown comes out of nowhere and is all of a sudden crashing into you, you’re not likely thinking, “Oh, hey! This must be my #1 fan to come greet me!” You’re thinking, “WHAT THE EFF??? GET IT OFF ME!!!”
Also, as a note FROM THE FANS, we don’t want to see your drunken ass on stage. Be drunk in the pit with the rest of us. You don’t add anything to the show. You think you’re going to grab the mic and “help out the singer”? You won’t. You’re just going to slur some gibberish or shout something idiotic like, “PUNX UNITE!!!” Either way. We didn’t pay to see and hear you onstage. We paid NOT to see and hear you onstage.
So, again, props to Fat Mike for not only clocking that fool like a pro, but carrying on with his job, LIKE A BOSS!!! Many others would have likely said “F**k this! I’m outta here!”
Also, it wasn’t like Mike got to get a good wind up and charge him with a mighty uppercut. He backhanded him like a pimp smacking a ho. And he went DOWN. Good night, Nerd. Better luck next time.
I actually got up on stage during a Pantera show during the Vulgar tour. I was planning on doing a quick on and off, but Phil threw the mic at me. …not in a bad way, but to sing the next verse. I sang my ass off, threw the mic back at him and dove off into the crowd. (I have a bootleg of it somewhere actually).
Kinda hard being a 16 year old and trying to compete with Phil. He either
A: has/had a hell of a stronger voice than me or
B: tech guy put the sound way down
cause you can hardly hear me in the recording, but he is loud as fuck.
That being said…guess I wouldn’t try that at a NOFX show. But then again, I wouldn’t be at a NOFX show to begin with…
Is it not punk to boot your fans in the face, or is it actually very much punk?

My God, Waiting For the Turning Point is such a great song, i love Superjoint Ritual, or Superjoint as they have to be known now for legal reason. It’s surprising how Phil has managed to turn it around from being almost universally frowned upon for all his stupid actions and crazy outbursts, to being a respected figure in the metal scene. Even though i loved Pantera, Superjoint and Down and some of his other stuff, i thought he was a total arsehole.
Seeing how hard he works now, in so many bands, with his festival and other stuff he’s been doing, he does seem to be a changed man and he actually seems to love what he does. I’m really looking forward to reading his book when it comes out, i’m sure it’ll be a great read.

And that video is great! With the Dimebag shooting and that fan being killed at the Lamb of God show in Czech Republic a while ago, it does seem like the bands would be nervous about some idiot running onstage and grabbing them - like you said, they’re at work, i wouldn’t appreciate some tit running up and grabbing me when i was trying to do my job.
It looked like a fucking sore one, and it was exactly what he needed [:)]
Have you seen his Metal Grasshopper thing? I thought it was funny as hell…
Nah, i haven’t seen it yet, i downloaded the first episode but haven’t got round to it. I downloaded that doc about the NOLA music scene too, he’s in it and probably the rest of Down, it’s about all those bands of that scene, looks pretty cool.

I watched it last week… it’s quite good.
Metal Grasshopper is awesome and so is Phil.
And so is backhanding drunken fratboy doodooheads and kicking them in the face.

I must check it out, and that Fat Mike reaction is totally justified.

There are 7 parts to it…
Metal Grasshopper is hilarious…you should watch it soon…

Guess my evening is planned.
I only saw the first episode but it was wonderful.
Just to clarify:there are 7 parts to the NOLA doc…there have only been 2 Metal Grasshoppers…I think the third one is supposed to arrive next week…

Oh, thanks. I was indeed thinking you meant there were 7 Grasshoppers. I’ll look for #2.
I enjoyed reading about this, and now I want to feel like I have 6 degrees of separation.
I saw this article posted about it today…

…and was surprised to see a dude I teach with on guitar in the Screeching Weasel video embedded within. I knew he toured/recorded with SW, but didn’t know he was there during that infamous moment (hanging in the back, trying his very best not to get involved in a shitty situation).
Fun!
HAHA!!! I was about to go off about how Mike shouldn’t apologize (I was afraid he’d made some retarded social grandstand about violence and whatnot), but then saw that he and the dude that got clocked quickly made right and got on with their lives before the video even went public, so good for both of them.
I still don’t want to listen to NOFX, but I’m really starting to dig this Fat Mike dude.
