Greatest Tricks Comes in a Jewel case!! YAY Cleo!

I just got my copy in the mail today (they inexplicably included a free bonus disc of Hollywood Rose - The Roots of Guns N Roses - wtf?).

I wanted to point out that the album art looks way better in real life than the internet pictures. The lettering is gold foil. Haven’t listened yet, though.

Also, Grmpy’s right about Mixxxes of the Mole - it’s better, overall, than I expected based on the awful NoW remix. The Warp City remix in particular is excellent.

First of all, am I crazy, or is “NWO” the same song, sans bass? The vox are the same, the guitar is the same, even the wailing sample behind all the material…is it really that obvious to the human ear, or am I imagining things? Did they really cut the fucking BASS out? It sounds wimpy in comparison, no ‘hard hitting’ melody so to speak. It almost seems like a channel in my speaker is out or something…

You’re imagining things. The bass is definitely there, and way up in the mix - kicks in around :45 seconds. Real simple, two note Paul Barker bassline.
That said, the whole thing sounds thin compared to the original. I think Al’s hearing-loss mix and the lack of real-life drums are what’s causing it.
Also, Scaccia’s playing sounds much sloppier. I wonder if that’s due to his chops deteriorating over the last 18 (!!!) years or if Al was just too lazy to get a really good take out of him this time.

Track by track review, just because I feel like it:

  1. Every Day Is Halloween (2010 Evil Version) - didn’t like this when I first heard it, but it’s growing on me. Wish he’d done it in time to play live.

  2. NWO (New World Order) - not exactly bad, but not exactly good either. Very sloppy and rushed sounding.

  3. Jesus Built My Hotrod - wow. Awful.

  4. Stigmata - I kind of like this version. Not as good as the original (obviously) but better than the Rantology version.

  5. Paint It Black - Terrible, sloppy, bar band stuff.

  6. Khyber Pass - I guess this is a remix/rerecord, because although it’s different than the original it has some of the same personnel, including one deceased person. It’s an OK version. Original’s better.

  7. Stranglehold - this is the one I said should’ve been slow like Filth Pig. Sounds like everything else from Cover Up.

  8. Iron Man - illustrates perfectly why “amusing” and “good” aren’t actually the same thing.

  9. Thunderstruck - Birmngham 6 did it way better.

  10. Purple Haze - It’s just Purple Head with Al singing the real lyrics instead of Gibby singing funny ones. Pointless.

  11. Sharp Dressed Man - I like the vocal effect, I guess. Yep. Ahem.

  12. Rehab - OK, this is a funny throwaway track. Hardly a future classic, but it makes me smile.

  13. Every Day Is Halloween (Retro Electro Remix) - Just like the original but with the new vocals. Yawn.

When I saw that Erie did the programming on Everyday, everything made sense. You can hear it in the “bassline”, it has strings in it similar to Blownload.

Paint it black has grown on me like a really bad horror movie. I think mikey’s guitar sells it for me cause I keep going back to that track.

Fuckin score! Idk if ur a GNR fan but I’d personally keep this. Anything Goes sounds better on there than it does on Appetite For Destruction

I gave it to a coworker who actually likes that stuff.

Whoah!

Just heard these samples for the first time…

[laugh]

It’s as if every track has been performed in the same tempo. The same song over and over and over…only with a different title and different lyrics. I never paid this much attention when it was being discussed originally…hence my surprise.

SO…he’s just re-recorded his back catalogue and thrown in some pointless crappy drum machine thrash covers of dinosaur rock staples…

[laugh]

And doesn’t even have the cash to release it on his own label.

[laugh]

Who is buying this shit?!?!?! Stop it NOW!!!

Thrash metal elevator muzak.

I heard there’s an I-Phone app out where you can download any song from the internet and turn it into a Ministry song.

It’s worse than that Crazy Frog shit that was happenin’ a few years back!

Yeah, I second the Crazy Frog call. Who’s up for Al does the Hamsterdance?

I don’t even know what a jewel case is.

I believe it is a normal cd cover?

AL SUCKS!!!

I don’t even know what a jewel case is.

Its the plastic that houses the plate that holds the cd. The way cds used to come rather than these cardboard sleeves.

Cardboard sleeves are kind of like little album covers. It would be cool if the CDs looked like little records and you played them on little record players.

Finally, an LP that doesn’t scare midgets.

Just when we thing he can’t go any lower he manages to lower the bar even more. Al has managed to turn the Ministry moniker into a living parody of itself, and not a funny one at that.

Ministry used to be the cream of the industrial-metal crop but this crap he’s releasing makes shit like Powerman 5000, Orgy and even Limp Bizkit seem like respectable bands.

God I wish Al still lived in Chicago so I could go egg his house!

Seriously, whoever is buying this shit you should truly be ashamed of yourselves! Stop enabling this washed-up dry-junkie!

Crucify him! Crucify him!

Just when we thing he can’t go any lower he manages to lower the bar even more.

Yeah Al has become truly formidable at doing that…infact the best in the industry without a doubt.

It’s got to the point where I won’t tell people I like Ministry for fear of them hearing anything that Al has put out over the last 5yrs! hahahahaha

On the plus side it is very unlikely that anyone outside of here has heard anything from the past five years.

Ha ha ha, very true. I think it really hurt the old bastard that he spent so much energy raging against a sitting president and the mainstream media didn’t give him the slightest bit of attention whatsoever. I’ll bet he’s bitter that Mikey Moore didn’t even use any of his songs in a documentary.

Yeah, just everyone who saw The Hurt Locker.
