Gunnar it’s bigger than TV, internet, and beer.
Social security doesn’t go, social programs aren’t funded. it is a big deal

Yeah. Sure it is.
But it’s not, really.
It’s just more pantomiming of an idiot clown troupe to distract as usual. Trust me, life is gonna go on.
I honestly don’t care if the government shuts down.
What, Yogi and Booboo don’t get to see Ranger Dave at Jellystone Park this week? So what? The IRS isn’t typing away at their laptops deciding if they go after P.Diddy or Lil Wayne this year? Big deal.
I would NEVER be so silly as to seek employment from a boss that’s $3 Trillion in debt with no plan for recovery. That’s just a bad gamble. So forgive me if I fail to weep hysterically.[/reply]
Better hope nothing happens with your passport or you have to go to a consulate should you happen to leave the US during the furlough.
Good thing you are not planning a vacation to a national park, don’t have children in Head Start or on WIC, are not applying for a mortgage, disability benefits, or bringing back an exotic virus from an overseas trip that infects part of the US population in an outbreak.

Yeah, but the vast majority of entry-level jobs in government offer benefits. That’s less often the case for entry-level jobs in the private sector.
For who? and what will that quality of life be like? Like it or not we’re all in this together. I wish I could choose not to care but I can’t. I know quite a few people that need these programs because their employers, that are not 3 trillion in debt, fuck them on a daily basis. I’m sure you know some of these people too. I’m okay for right now, but I know what it’s like, I get paid through state taxes and jerry brown is doing the state right.

Government jobs keep up with the cost of living too where as private employers don’t give a fuck just so long as their profit margin is up. We HAVE to have a minimum wage because if employers could pay us less they would. Private sector cares about its money government cares about it voters.
Who do you want to work for?

but this time, it really is.
i can understand the feeling of ‘trauma burn’ you have, every week there is some new huge threat, some new huge bill or some new huge whatever that is supposed to change everything, and for most upper-middle-class white males nothing changes. and that is great… for them. but for FEMA workers (who have a natural disaster to attend to, but are now operating at a cut rate because of this freeze) for municipal workers, for local council workers, for LARGE chunks of the military, for vets, for people who are on certain assistance programs… this is a huge deal, one that could VERY easily result in crippling debt and even homelessness.
the issue isnt ‘does this touch my life DIRECTLY’, as much as it is, ‘HOW does this touch my life’.
i have a few friends who will not be getting a paycheck during this shutdown. one of the programs i work with is now in danger because of this shut down. the food handout organization i am co-running with a board of dedicated brilliant people is ALSO in potential financial danger now.
not everyone will be hurt by this directly, you are right, but a HUGE amount of people will be. and because of that, those not hurt should be aware.
I could make about 40k more if I went to industry. I would also have more stress and less stability. We joke that we can sit at the same desk for our entire career doing the same job and work for five different companies. However, it is the truth when not a direct employee.
Min wage would be about $22/hour if it had kept up with inflation. Why do you think all the fast food workers have been protesting/on strike over the last few months? Working fast food at ages 30 to 45 for $7 to $11/hour does not make ends meet when you are married and have two kids to feed.
My younger sister is one who fell into the wage/insurance gap and can’t get out of it. She has tried several times. My parents are hoping that eight months from now that she finally succeeds in becoming independent at age 35. Otherwise, she’s on the inheritance retirement plan.

These people cannot control a checkbook and want to profit from the US’s bad credit.
It freaks me out that they are also in charge of a nuclear arsenal!

There’s two great mysteries of life that I believe will never be solved. 1) You and 2) What the fuck is wrong with the Japanese…?:
I like Asians in schoolgirl uniforms. Now that that’s out of the way…
The government shut down does have a negative impact on many people with certain jobs. It’s not the end of the world and of course it’s not as dramatic as the psychotic-blow-everything-out-of-fucking-proportion media is making it seem. I know some guys who are/were in the military and won’t be getting paid for drills (I don’t know what the fuck that is or if it’s that big of a deal, honestly. They just told me). However, troops “in action” will still be paid apparently. Fact is, this obviously doesn’t help some people who need a job to go to every day.
This all shows the power one fuckhead (John Boehner) can have over the country. The fact that one orange, money hungry, cocksucking, motherfucking, peice of shit that has been my mortal enemy since I saw his orange, droopy, face can play such a huge role in fucking things up irritates me… just a little bit.
I mean, seriously. Fuck that Keystone pipeline and all the other dumb excuses this twat has come up with to cause this. Even if I were retarded enough to agree with this wretched pile of feces or not, I’d still find it unnerving and wrong that one person can essentially blackmail the government and hold people hostage unless he gets what he wants - $$$. Even if this was happening over something I agree with I’d still be against it. Some of them nigga’s got too much power, brah.
This could all end quickly too: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/02/john-boehner-end-shutdown_n_4030766.html
On a side note, I find it very amusing that some of the same people who bash the incompetence of the government (understandably at times) and call for less government (or no government) are upset about a, get this, government shut down. Not referring to anyone on this board. Just in general.

I heard this interesting question: why should we pay taxes for the days the government is shut down?
Because the money we save during this “shutdown” won’t actually impact any expenditures this year. Every dollar raised this year (and probably for the next 10-20 years) has already been spent. It was spent years ago.
We are 100% sustained by debt. We just keep borrowing against that debt and increasing more and more a giant bazillion trillion gillion pound IOU that will never (and can never) be repaid. The government’s solution EVERYTIME . . . . “raise the debt ceiling”. That means that since we always exceed how much debt we’ve previously voted to allow . . . we always have to raise it AGAIN.
