I’m not a fan of Godzilla films, large monster films or any of that old shit, although i must say, i thought Cloverfield was really good, much as i expected to hate it.
This, though, wow. Looks pretty amazing. It looks intense as fuck, and i’m glad they got some good actors in. The idea of a giant monster destroying the place and none of it being played for laughs is definitely something that interests me, i’m really looking forward to this one now.
Never seen Ultraman, is he in the Godzilla films? I don’t like all the man in a suit stamping on models stuff, i’ve seen some of them and i just didn’t care for it. I think the new one looks great as a film, not just as a monster movie. Films about giant monsters do not appeal to me in the slightest to be honest, so this one must be doing something right to appeal to someone like me.
Here’s the previous trailer. I think it looks pretty extraordinary myself, but like i say i am not at all interested in the previous films, the history of Godzilla, Godzilla fighting another man in a suit or any of that, i’m just looking for a good film. If it’s crap i won’t care, but i’m hoping it’ll be as great as it looks. The whole look of the film is beautiful.
Haha, sounds interesting, was it a Japanese show? I have heard of Ultraman but i’ve never seen any of it.
*Just looked him up, he does look familiar, probably saw clips somewhere. Maybe they can work a really downbeat, realistic version of him into the sequel to this Godzilla [:)]
hahaha, madness! Those crazy Japs! I’ve been interested in Japan since i was a kid, they really do have an amazing, strange and diverse entertainment culture.
I’m a little iffy on the actual monster (but, hey, that’s a typical stubborn old man response, so just disregard it) but the mood and feel of this is great. Properly dark and ominous.
I love the shot of the fighter jets just falling out of the sky. Great stuff.
Oh, and for the record . . . . I LOVE Godzilla and all his bastard cousins, foes, homeboys, etc. The only thing cooler than Godzilla is Gamera.
And if we’re keeping score, I DID protest and boycott the film that came out around 2000 or so. It just looked too gay so I never bothered.
I would like to see a remake of King Kong v. Godzilla if and only if they fix that bullcrap ending. Because, let’s just accept reality . . .
1. Godzilla would kick King Kong's ass.
2. Godzilla would not just leave and walk into the ocean like a bitch. If anyone is gonna leave like a bitch, it's the monkey.

The End.
I’d argue against you except for the fact you’re 100% correct.

My feelings exactly. All that old Godzilla shit was waaaaay before my time and couldn’t be bothered to check em out.
The only Godzilla I was exposed to was that 98 film with Mathew Broderick, as cheesy and outdated as it is today, I got a soft spot for that film, I quite like it. Now this film looks amazing, will watch for sure.
I remember growing up with a black and white TV that only picked up 4 channels. Nothing was better than hearing from kids on the street that a King Kong or Godzilla movie was on TV. We’d run inside and kill an hour or so tweaking the antenna to pick up the station while we watched those giant monster fights. Totally awesome.
Yeah, it’s nostalgia like that that makes me feel so very very ancient.
I’m old enough to remember when tv (here in Australia) finished around midnight and started again at 8am. During the night there would be only the test pattern. There would also be a break during the day, I think from 2 til 4 where the station would turn off transmission. A fucking break?! That’s amazing when you compare it to now. We have cable (called Foxtel here) and we get something like 50 channels. And we don’t even get sports and movies and some of the entertainment channels (for that you have to pay considerably extra).
And I remember censorship also. “Fuck” on tv was a big NO NO. As were breasts (unless it was a nature doco). In 1985 or 1986, the film An American Werewolf in London screend for the first time on tv. It was censored to all hell (the porno cinema part had a big black square over the top of it to cover the women’s breasts) and was STILL a big deal the next day in class.
“Holy shit did you see that last night?!?! The bit where the werewolf goes crazy and shit and bites the guy’s head off?!?”
When Beverley Hills Cop first aired around the same time it was hilarious. Every “fuck” was cut out making the film seem weird and disjointed. And same scenario the next day in class. This was 30 years ago when swearing in movies and even just swearing in general was a BIG deal.
And as for all that tv antenna static shit…<pulls hair out>
Here in Portugal when the emission was over they played the national anthem! We only had two channels and we owned a black and white Philips tv set. And the pace was so different, everything was slower, but we didn´t care, it really entertained us. Now we have 100 channels, internet and everything is vomiting images at an insane rate, but the joy of discovering things, the privilege of seeing something is missing. Now we have everything for granted and that’s the problem I think… and of course we’re not kids anymore.
Same in the UK, there used to be only 3 channels when i was a kid, and they ended around midnight or just after, with the national anthem, God Save The Queen. I remember they started broadcasting later in the late 80s on one of the channels and it was a big deal. Our Channel 4 only started at the end of 1982 and wasn’t available in the whole UK at that time.
Like the guys mentioned above as well, i remember films being edited pretty harshly until probably the mid-90s. Beverly Hills Cop was shown on ITV or BBC one Christmas and was cut to shreds, but was showing at the same time on the Irish channel RTE uncut. Pretty weird considering you’d think of the Republic of Ireland with it’s ban on condoms and porn (until the 90s i believe) to be a bit more repressed than the UK. The versions of Die Hard, Robocop, Lethal Weapon and all the action greats that UK television showed were mere shadows of their former selves, they were hacked to fucking pieces.
