When Godsmack first came out I didn’t really like them. After seeing them open for Sabbath in 1999 (Jones Beach 7th row), for four members they had a big sound (very good musicians too). I enjoyed the show (Sabbath 7 row ruled!) & I have been into them since. I think of them as Alice in Chains & Trent (lyrics) meets Creed (music). Later I found out they’re fans of Sabbath & Rush.
My first impression of them was their first video during the height of the nu-metal craze and their guitarist was wearing a dr seuss type hatt that was cool with the “weird” alt-metal-ozzfest crowd for a week.
that pretty much decided it for me right there. PLus they took the name of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands, and basically vocally raped his style… that was another strike… and that whole voodoo song where the guy does this wican ritual in the video and goes off in interviews on how he’s a practicing witch seemed like another cash in attempt to me. uhm, they had that stupid fucking annoying pro-navy commercial that was on 24/7 around here…
mmmm yeah that’s not really gonna work for me
I think they are bland, derivative and uninteresting.
But I like the percussion on “Voodoo” and some of their songs are (extremely) guilty pleasures if I’m piss drunk at a bowling alley (this actually happened recently)…
yeah voodoo was not bad there was another one that was not bad either but the fact I can’t remember the name tells ya how good it was.
Kinda thought Godsmack was trying to be Alice In Chains’s cooler older brother but just was more of a dork!

Tried getting into them when they first came about, and couldn’t get into it. Now they’re like the nickelback down here. One of those “cool” bands that come into town so often.
Were they the band that did that “i stand alone” song? I listened to that song about 100 times wasted as fuck at schoolies week (end of grade 12 celebration) in 2002. Have never heard it or this band since. I would put it on a mix cd with the offspring’s ‘gone away’ and metallica’s ‘turn the page’ and listen to it while drunk and then i would smash that cd.
They’re one of those bands that came out in a certain time that I just couldn’t get into. I wanted to, but I just wasn’t going for it. And this is around the time I was just discovering Alice In Chains. Bands like Staind were good at the time, and there was slipknot and so on… Think i’m past that point where i’m willing to even sit and try to hear a single song of theirs now.
