GODFLESH "US AND THEM"

BTW - Filthpig owns Us and Them.

Thread over.

Like hell! This shit has just begun ya wee radge!

Filth Pig maybe Ministry’s 2nd best album but it still is MILES behind the devastation of Us And Them. Just the guitar effect alone Justin creates on Endgames destroys anything Filth Pig brings to the table not to mention Us And Them’s HUGE SWEEPING basslines and CRUSHINGLY SHARP breaks and DUB_TASTIC beats that crush skulls throughout it…and also the best song on Filth Pig is Filth Pig…reason being the killer bassline…which is lifted directly from the song Nightgoat by the Melvins…to suggest Filth Pig comes anywhere near Us And Them means Jizzim is getting the most violent bumming of his life when i get home tonight from the bar!![mad][mad][mad]

I actually listened to this while mowing the lawn this morning.

Lots of breakbeat loops. Sets the album pretty firmly in 1999. I often said at the time, “People need to cool it on these breakbeats. Everyone from Bowie to Midnight Oil to the Fox fanfare at the end of tv shows is using 'em, and it’s gonna sound as dated as disco in 10 years.”

I was right.

We can go back and forth all we want, but what Godflesh really needs to do is release a live album.

True true…there also NEEDS to be a live dvd from at least the SOLAH era.

A proper live album would be best. Or a live anthology with something from every tour.

SOLAH is one of the best industrial albums I have ever heard. To me it stand head and shoulders above the rest of Godflesh’s material.

Just my opinion.

MaggitTooth and any Us and Them fans - there’s a bootleg of Godflesh from Eindhoven July 9th 1999, that you guys HAVE to have if you’re a fan of this. the sound is fantastic.

Link (3 days then i’m nuking it)

Yeah i’ve got that…cheers though…and i suggest anyone else who doesn’t have it take advantage of Elrics kindness.

I was right.

No you weren’t, you was a numpty.

Christ, Tooth - calm down.

Us and Them is Ok but didn’t really do much to advance the career of Godflesh or Broadrick.

Now the Toot is really gonna have tae go radge on yo honky ass ma honky!!!

“Us And Them” is Godflesh’s unique gem that puts Hip Hop/Drum’n’Bass/Dub and Metal into a realm that is beyond DEVASTATION!!!

AND…it did indeed “advance” Justins career as he lifted the breakbeat for “Defiled” (spookiest song ever) directly from Drum’n’Bass legends Total Science classic track “Advance”[cool]

Now back to Filth Pig…it’s a great album…but Dark Side Of The Spoon kicks it’s ass!!! Us And Them KO’s both of them without breaking a sweat!

Now tonight when i come home Jizzim that fuckin Pure album better not be on the turntable or you’re going DOWN!!![mad][mad][mad][mad]

Jizzim trying to suck up to Al is…UNACCEPTABLE!!![mad][mad][mad][cool]

listening to it now, and damn, yeah, this is owning filth pig.
I always thought that the rhythm in Control Freak reminded me of an updated Crash and Burn from Twitch. but much more fucking wicked with the thrash guitar and bass.
The Internal is still a favorite of mine, and I realize that perhaps the transition to Jesu was fine with me when it occured.
Live to Loose, wow forgot about this one. Another pre-Jesu type track.
Man, this is a fucking good album. It’s probably been about 2 years since I last listened to it.
WHOSE TRUTH IS YOUR TRUTH

Totally!

Whoever suggested this album dated has a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock!

The album is unadulterated genius.

Jizzim needs to lay off the doobies.

Im quite fond of this album. Defiled is one of my favorite Godflesh tracks, i ran through the woods at night once listening to this on headphones and it was very effective.

listened to it again today.
it’s just missing ONE thing…
and that’s a long droney track at the end. it appears love and hate in dub was the last godflesh release to feature such greatness.

That’s just another reason this is a unique Godflesh record.

This album kicks ass from start to finish and i’m glad Justin didn’t end it with a droney number. There’s definately a number of tracks which could be on a Jesu record for sure. The song “Decent” is one of them.

Maggitooth, you are way overboard in this thread. ‘Filth Pig’ is much better than ‘Us and Them’ because, as others have stated, ‘Us and Them’ borders dangerously on nu-metal and has some very simplistic and juvenile American sounding riffs. Also it is dated by the break beats. And something no one has mentioned:

Broadrick’s lyrics are that of a fucking four year old.

That being said, I like the album. I like the dub, jungle whatever shit and the guitar effects. It’s really cool and I just wish it hadn’t been tainted by such horrendous lyrics/

“I, me, mine”
“Follow the signs”

Come on…

No chance!

Like i said earlier…Dark Side Of The Spoon RAPES Filth Pig and Us And Them abuses both of them!

Nu-Metal?? Pffft Have you actually bothered listening to the album!!! Exactley what song has a nu-metal riff???

As for lyrics…Godflesh’s lyrics have never really been too deep lets face it.

listened to this album again today and I agree now, what makes it great is that it doesn’t end with a drone. it would have been cliche at that point. ending it with internal/live to lose makes sense, since they are drastically different from the other material on the album (and I believe recorded during selfless if I remember correctly) .
the only two songs that sound “out dated” from the drum n bass thing are i,me mine and defiled. but, that doesn’t sound outdated as say the drum machines on streetcleaner, skinny puppy stuff from the 80’s etc.
as for lyrics, well, there’s really only two lyrcists that I really think there’s only a few great writers: edward ka-spel and tom waits being the best imo. never was a fan of justin’s lyrics (yes that includes jesu) or most lyrics in music for that matter. nor am I a fan of screaming vocals/whatever you want to call the vocal style on “i, me mine” et al. but on the other hand, I do like his voice on tracks like the internal.

well, i’ll have to step forward as the one guy who really likes JKB lyrics - often he pares them down so much that’s it’s a very mantra-ish couple of lines and then just repeats them over and over again. It’s an effect that Pitch[ ]Shifter managed to do well in their early days as well. Altho, if i want clever word play I put on hip-hop or listen to some Clutch. Neil Fallon has great lyrics.

And something no one has mentioned:

Broadrick’s lyrics are that of a fucking four year old.

Glad SOMEONE ELSE finally had the courage to say this. His ideas lyrically often leave a lot to be desired. ESPECIALLY on US AND THEM (which originally was supposed to be all instrumental in its early stages. Broderick changed his mind and thought that fans would complain that it sounded like a Techno Animal album and added vocals at the last moment - which explains why the lyrics suck like nothing else: I…am gonna get defiled ha ha ha - is that a joke or something?)

There are a couple of decent tracks - don’t remember which ones - but as a whole the album is pretty embarrassing. Which is why I abstained from buying the damn thing in the first place. I started to lose interest in Godflesh when SOLAH came out. That album just bored me to tears.

Which is why I abstained from buying the damn thing in the first place.

So basically you’re commenting on an album you don’t even own let alone are familiar with??!! Bwahahahahahahaha!!

“Us And Them” and “SOLAH” are easily Godflesh’s best albums…reason being…

“Hunter”
“Gift From Heaven”
“Time, Death And Wastefulness”
“Frail”
“Almost Heaven”
“Endgames”
“Witchhunt”
“Decent”

Need i say anymore???

actually, I think SOLAH In Dub owns the original, and owns alot of other godflesh records.
