I know some of you love them, and some not. Ghost released this ad a few days ago. Apparently it played on one station (VH1 Classics or something) at 4:00am. During a Caddyshack commercial break… It hasn’t been replayed since.
More bands need to do this kind of stuff. It’s brilliant.
The only copy of it is shitty though, so you’ll need to put up the volume:
I thought the Rev’s first comment was just brilliantly dry sarcasm. But for everyone’s benefit . . .
Yes, it’s always been the same singer.
They just have redone his image . . . now for the third time. I guess they’re doing it for each album.
I like that they have kind of a WWF or Dethklok storyline / mythos surrounding each new assemblage of Ghost. It’s fun, and it gives “meaning” to the new image and such instead of “Hi, we’re Slipknot. Yayyyy, new masks! Aren’t they scary?”
I really love the dry humor of the Ghost guys too.
“Papa II’s brother . . . he is a full three months younger.”
HAHAHAHAHA!!! Come on! That’s brilliant stuff right there.
I don’t presently own any albums but I’ve listened to 'em on YouTube plenty of times. I like them. I like everything they’re doing. The sound, the theatrics, the imagery.
After watching the commercial I went back and revisited their catalog.
What they need to do instead of switching to chrome demon masks is remember how to write head-nodding riffs like they did on their first album and back off on the AOR synth stuff.
Has anyone seen them live? I’ve caught them twice now… the first time was a real event, and completely sold me on them. Download festival 2012. Have a look: https://youtu.be/hXQynE2dDvk
The atmosphere before they came on was genuinely weird… not bad for a small tent, during daylight. Just wish they’d played Here Comes The Sun, which I only heard later. Not a Beatles fan, but that works so well. Second time I saw 'em was weird in a bad way… a package tour with some shitey techy metal band as the main draw. Ghost headlined but most people left before they came on. Their loss. I think the second record was a bit patchy, but I’m enjoying the new song so far - hoping for good things.
I’ve not seen 'em live, but I’d love to. As you’ve hinted, they seem to get packaged with some odd pairings which is one of the reasons I’ve not gone out of my way to catch them. I think I’ve seen them as support for Mastodon and something else I don’t care for . . . Deftones or something.
I think the PERFECT match-up would be Ghost as opener for KING DIAMOND.
