I’ll never understand why people constantly recommend Throbbing Gristle for newbies lol. That would be like recommending beastiality to the kid who just discovered internet porn
I do like the guys list though, with the exception of a two or three groups i wouldn’t recommend, but it pretty much lines up with 15 year old me introduction to the genre. Also bands like PiG, Chemlab and Foetus are always overlooked in favor of shit tastic groups like Sister Machine Gun lmao
I get it. The original Throbbing Gristle fans in the late 70s were mostly “newbies” to industrial music, because it didn’t exist before then. It was weird and difficult, but that was part of what drew people to it. So if you want to have that experience with TG today, then yeah, check them out early in your exploration of the genre, before you’re desensitized to the kind of sound they started.
This is pretty close to the list of bands I started with as a teenager, too.
Yea don’t get me wrong I enjoy Throbbing Gristle and their insane experimentation. I always said they were more punk and rebellious than most of the punk bands out there. But it’s just not something I’d recommend for a newbie, I certainly didn’t get them when I first got into the genre… it took time. Some people may be able to appreciate them from the get go but I don’t think that’s normally the case.
If someone would’ve handed me a copy of DOA in high school with its pedophiliac images and spooky soundscapes I would’ve thought you were a fucking nut!!
I hear ya, and it doesn’t only apply to the so-called Industrial genre, but this realm probably has more oddball examples than others. I think it’s a weird phenomenon, but when people just want legit entry-level suggestions so that they can assess whether to dig deeper, the knuckleheads need to swing their nerd balls and try and show how “legit” and edgy they are. It’s like asking an Australian for a suggestion on getting into heavy metal . . . . and they recommend SunnO))).

This just happened to a friend of mine who really only listens to Ghost and SOAD and was looking for more metal groups I recommended Ministry and White Zombie and some try hard edgelord recommended Earth and Sunn O)))) (did I get the number of closed parentheses right?)
