Remember Shay Jones - female vocalist for Ministry during the With Sympathy recordings & tour?
This is a snippet from her homepage(art-spa.com):
“I eventually came to Chicago to pursue my dreams. Eventually, I ended up singing with Ministry, CO-writing “I wanted to tell her” and “Foxhole trot”. I am still waiting on royalties.”
Now, Foxhole Trot, what a title!
Sounds just as good as What He Say?/Do The Ettawa [;)]
Is this another unreleased Ministry track from those pop years? Anyone heard?
I’ve NOT heard, but I’m definitley interested, as I’ve had a total crush on the woman for some time now.
Always up for some illumination, ferreals.
HA!
Perfect opportunity - send her an email, ask her for details about the odd track and tell her about your feelings [;)]
She´ll be flattered, you´ll feel great about yourself and we´ll hopefully get some more interesting songinfo to add to the ever growing library of old Ministry obscurities…
yea dude hit her up. turn down the volume on the “professing your love” and get some song info. share it with the group. get a low-quality MP3. whatever.
Then again, I had completely forgotten about the forgetable ‘So-So Life’ until I heard it again a couple of years ago.
During the winter of 83/84 Shay, Stevo, Brad and I, along with jazz great Phil Upchurch’s nephew Andre, did a few shows as the Jones Gang. It was a much more ‘musical’ band than Ministry ever was. A lot more fun at least. I can’t recall the names of any of those songs either except for one called ‘Blue Suede’. Maybe Shay’s got the wrong band.
“I am still waiting on royalties.” - now would that be Al’s fault, or the record company’s? Wempathy - you know anything about that contract with Arista back in the day? Just curious how that deal benefited the band at the time. Someone has to be getting those mini royalty checks in the mail since those first 4 songs on the album are getting regular play on cable and satellite radio stations.

I refused to sign the Arista contract. It seemed like a lose/lose at the time. Too much risk involved. Al was gonna get at least 50%, so he had to power to do as he pleased…I would have been foolish to sign. As far as I know, only Al & Stevo signed it, which is why only they appear on the sleeve.
I don’t know what Shay’s arrangement was. She kinda rejoined on the tail end of sessions and did only the first half of the tour. She was replaced by Yvonne for the second half of the tour.
My understanding is that the studio fees for WS and tour costs ate up most of Al and Stevo’s signing bonus so Al sold the royalties to Arista to help finance the tour. At least I got a weekly salary and per diem on tour, which is actually more than Stevo was getting (even though he had signed).
Thanks so much for the insight. The behind-the-scenes business side really fascinates me, good or bad. Sounds like it was a good thing you didn’t sign!
If Shay hasn’t seen any royalties by now, she’s probably S.O.L.
