The Soft Bulletin is an excellent piece of work. I saw them during this tour and it was an amazing show. A great vibe with the audience.
Flaming Lips are avant garde??
Sigh… that’s not really what I meant. However…
One definition of Avant-Garde:
The adjective form is used in English, to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.
And now Excerpts from a description of some Flaming Lips shit
…the experimental Zaireeka (1997), a four-CD album which is intended to be heard by playing all four CDs in four separate CD players simultaneously. The music incorporated both traditional musical elements and “found” sounds (as in musique concrete), often heavily manipulated with recording studio electronics.
As part of the development of this project, the band conducted a series of “parking lot experiments” and then later, “boombox experiments”. In the parking lot experiments up to 40 volunteers were given cassettes created by the band to be played at a parking lot in their cars’ stereo systems simultaneously. In the “boom box experiments” an orchestra composed of up to 40 volunteers with modified “boombox”-type tape players was “conducted” - directed to vary the volume, speed or tone of the tape they were playing (again composed by the band) - by Wayne Coyne.
I would say the above could be considered experimental or innovative, thus by loose definition (or very solid definition if you go by the definition I copied above) yes - the flaming lips are avant-garde.
Now I’m going to go listen to Dead Kennedys.
Stairwell - 1
Peligro - 0
I’ve heard I Can Be A Frog from Embryonic, sounds good. Seen the Lips live too, great band.
Fingers crossed that this is as good as I hope it is.
Only two weeks to go.
The anticipation! The anticipation!
[:)]
I’d heard about the 4-CD experiment, but those parking lot experiments sound fucking amazing.
The amount of work that would’ve gone into coordinating it, let alone recording the music to begin with and envisaging how it would sound…
Flaming lips, +2.
But for the fact they attract furries, -3. It’s not the band’s fault, but I hate furries. I hope South Park makes an episode ripping on them. I can just see it. A take on that Jean Claude Van Damme film, Hard Target, except it’s furries getting hunted instead of homeless men. That would be ideal. [:)]
Furries.
Ya know, I could’ve gone a lifetime without knowing what the term “yiff” meant, and I’d’ve been FINE.
Anyway, the concept of a 4xCD meant to be played simultaneously intrigues me. Didn’t Meat Beat Manifesto do something similar?
(ANOTHER band I really oughta check out.)
Don’t start with Satyricon for MBM…I did, it sucks.
I’ve heard a bunch of their tracks, from “Mars Needs Women” to “Prime Audio Soup,” but never got around to snagging an album.
Advice taken with a grain of salt. All too often on this board, I find that a band’s “worst” album is one of my faves. Case in point: Killing Joke’s “Outside the Gate.”
Get “Subliminal Sandwich”. It’s a two-disc, but a great starter. After that, get “99%” and/or “Satyricon”. Anything post or pre-those albums…take with a grain of salt. Lots of hits, but even more misses. That includes “Storm The Studio” or “Armed Audio Warfare”.

Will do.
Yeah Subliminal Sandwich is good.
Despite me not liking Flaming Lips - for those who do JJJ radio station are playing a live set from them this Sunday at 5pm EDST I think. Can stream online too for those not in Australia
Jack Dangers did some cool stuff on the last tour he did with the video screens. I don’t have the time but youtube their last tour to see some interesting ways they incorperated mixing video
OK so I’m listening to this now and it’s none too shabby. Very messy and noisy and not immediately likeable but it’ll grow on me. ‘Gemini Syringes’ is great…
I really like a lot of their work but there’s probably an equal amount I don’t like. ‘Transmissions from the satellite heart’ is the one I go back to the most, and I love ‘Yoshimi…’, but hated their last album (awesome album art though). I will give this new one a go.
Boris also have a 2 disc simultaneous album. I have personally never gone to the extent of cueing up any such multi disc experiments, though I imagine it’s quite easy to do in this brave digital age.
