I had a friend in 1st grade who had an older brother ( who also got me into Rush ) took us one afternoon to a brand spanking new tan stucco multiplex ( 8 whole screens! ) on the northside. One of the best experiences of my life!
Ha! I still remember the uproar the Atari 2600 Halloween game caused a few years later. Think they discontinued it!
Anyway one of my top 5 films of all time. Horror or otherwise. Great score, decent acting, pacing, good ensemble cast, great lighting ( yay Dean Cundey - love how he lit the wash room scene where Annie gets stuck…all that gorgeous blue! ) I could go on and on.
My first R film was Dracula (1979) with Frank Langella as the Count at a drive-in.
Carpenter’s Halloween really is a great horror film, I watched it for the first time in years along with the second one recently after viewing Zombie’s remake. While I enjoyed the remake for what it was, it does not in any way eclipse the original.

Sigh.
They don’t make em like this anymore…!
I hate that film. HATE it!
I think ‘R’ in Australia is different than ‘R’ in America. I think it’s the equivalent of yr ‘NC17’ or something, in that you can’t see it legally until you are 18 or over.
In that respect, the first R film I saw in Australia would have been…maybe…the Emanuelle films of the late 70s - early 80s. They were softcore porn flicks - although some were harder than others. I saw alot of fucked up shit when I was young. I saw Shocking Asia back in 1984 when I was only 10 years old. That messed me up. Saw heaps of euro trash porn too! I was literally addicted to the stuff by the time I hit puberty.
My parents took us to see Clash Of The Titans at the drive-in, but I ended up watching most of My Bloody Valentine on one of the other screens. No sound, but it was my first exposure to an R-rated horror film. I then saw the first two Halloween movies on HBO. The first R flick I paid to see as a ‘legal’ 17-year-old - Beverly Hills Cop 2.
hmm, i remember sneaking into the local 4 screen as a kid and watching Predator. That was my first ‘R’ film at the shows, but the neighbors had cable, we used to watch all kinds of shit, cuz their parents didn’t care.
‘Halloween’ is a good film and one of the few decent horror films out there. The best parts are in the daytime when you see MM sneaking around gardens, daytime has better scare potential than night. ‘Halloween’ was during Carpenter’s good phase: ‘Assault on Precingt 13’, ‘Halloween’, ‘The Fog’, ‘Escape From New York’, ‘The Thing’… all quite good.
In Ireland age ratings are as follows: G, PG, 12A, 15A, 16, 18 (the A means people under that age can see it with someone over it, for 16 and 18 films no one is supposed to be admitted to the film who is under that repsective age no matter who they’re with.)
Used to be just G, PG, 12, 15, 18, but they introduced a 16 rating after ‘Bad Santa’ came out a few years ago because kids under 15 could see it (it had a 15 rating) and got a bit of a surprise when they saw santa pissing himself and drilling some black booty, telling her she “aint gonna shit right for a week.”
My first 18s film in a cinema was ‘Sleepers’ in 1996/1997, I was 10. Was more happy about getting admitted to it than about the film itself.
Michael Myers is awesome. Especially in the first movie.
The whole pace of that movie is great, and I remember being scared shitless when I watched it.
I haven’t had a chance to check out Rob Zombie’s remake/rework or whatever. Is it worth it? I’ve been holding off because I don’t want it to ruin my view of the original…
I’m not sure if it had an R rating, but I know the first movie my parents had to take me to was the first Ghostbusters movie. May have been like PG16 or whatever the rating system was like back then. All I remember is being so pleased that I went to a movie that required an adult to take me.
Showing my age here but I was shown Trainspotting by my parents at around 14.
My own personal choice was Natural Born Killers, and I still love them both today.
Man, I can’t stand Natural Born Killers!
That film falls way short of what it could’ve been. the only reason I own a copy is because of the character tie-ins with the fist 2 tarantino movies. Seymour Scagnetti is Mr. Blondes (Vick Vega) P.O. and I beleive the Vincent Vega as well as Marcellus Wallace are referenced in the film as well. the soundtrack is fantastic (hat tip to Mr. Reznor for that-probably the only time a LARD song will ever make a soundtrack!) But other than that the story itself is stupid. It watches like it’s trying to be an Americanized SALo’! We are all captives of the media being imprisoned by what’s expected of us! Bleck!

I’m not quite sure of the first R rated Flick I ever saw…Probably the End of “Zapped” one of those old school titty flicks. Scott Bao had magic powers and made all of the prom girls’ dresses come off. My cousins showed it to me. My parents were not thrilled since I was like 6 years old at the time! First full R Rated flick…? probably one of those vigilante flicks that were popular back in the mid 80’s. Now that I think about it, it was probably “Commando” with Arnold Schwarzenegger. One of my friends at the time was way into those stupid flicks. First R rated film I had seen in the theater was “Coming to America” I remember thinking at the time, that the movie was stupid!

i think mine was probably the terminator when i was around 7. my parents try to tell me that they wouldn’t have taken me to that at that age but they did. so it was either that or something like lethal weapon back then.
with the exorcist there was so much hype. and being so sick and the temperature outside was 30 degrees below zero or something i guess i was ready for the hurlfest of my young life anyway…took a bus up north in chicago. sat with some friends and couldn’t remember too much after that.
when i saw a clockwork orange for the first time, i had a similar experience.
