… I gotta say Pan’s Labyrinth most definitely deserves a spot in the top 10.l
I was really disappointed with that flick. it seemed it was based more on the sets and scenery than the story. thought the story was pretty stupid.
As far as movie of the decade the only one I can think that was utterly hilarious that had tears streaming down my face was Super Troopers. it definitely needs to make the list. I liked V quite a bit when it came out but my old roomate kinda wore it out whenever I would come home that fucker would be watching it!
I know people hate remakes but for Mainstream tripe I’m going with Texas Chainsaw Massacre! that was a damn good remake, I think! (Plus its got Lee Ermey in it and that guy is great!)

Damn… all that cause I don’t like a shitty movie with a poor plot line and 1 dimensional characters…? holy shit, would love to see your reaction to an actual good movie that I don’t like,

Well this IS coming from the guy who rated The Last Sucker higher than LORAH so go figure [;)] Sorry Grmpy, I just can’t let you live that one down!
I gotta say my reaction to your thoughts on Pan’s Labyrinth was about the equivalent to Peligro’s. I just don’t understand how anyone who is slightly partial to fantasy or who has any sense of wonder at all would not like the film! It had a great story and the characters were developed just enough for the viewer to care for them.
I dunno Grmpy, I guess I just don’t get your sense of aesthetics, but hey, lots of people don’t get mine, it’s cool. But I gotta say I think yer batshit crazy on this account!

aesthetically speaking the movie was great, but I need a little more than just “look” to like a film. The scenery, wardrobe, makeup, effects etc were great, just thought the story was boring. Flashy settings don’t make for a good story.
A good story can can hold a viewer with out flashy sets and costumes. Pan’s Labyrinth looked like a test in the opposite direction. Let’s see if we can hold a viewers attention by all of these pretty pictures and have a shitty story.
As Far as Last Sucker being better than LORAH, I only like 1/2 the songs off OF LORAH Can’t stand the TItle track! that white noise or shaker instrument that dominates the song bugs me to no end! The missing and Diety, while I like them, sound like the same song to me so… Last SUCKER BITCHEZ!

…THE PHANTOM MENACE!!![/reply]
You’ve got me mixed up with some other guy on a forum. Between that shitty little boy and Jar Jar I wouldn’t say I “enjoyed” Phantom Menace…Unless were talking Darth Maul, Qui gon and Obi Wan. but those three don’t make the movie… still would watch it over Pan’ Labyrinth though… WOOT WOOT! Why? cause it’s still a better story…Suck it!

Last Sucker over The Land of Rape and Honey? Phantom Menace over Pan’s Labyrinth? Guns and Ammo over National Geographic? My god. This is called a “tell” in the poker world.
The ‘shaker’ noise is my favorite thing about the song TLORAH [:|]
As for Pan’s Labyrinth I can see why it would not be everyone’s cup of tea, it is a pretty dark fantasy. I however loved it, probably my favorite Guillermo Del Toro film. His Hellboy II incorporates a lot of fantasy/celtic folklore aspects to it as opposed to the teutonic horrors of the first one which was all nazis and Rasputin.
I haven’t seen Avatar yet, the CGI puts me off a bit, but I’ll probably go sometime on Christmas day.
Pan’s Labyrinth is definitely more ‘artsy’ and difficult than the average mainstream fantasy fodder. It doesn’t have a swashbuckling hero or the token beautiful maiden waiting to be rescued or mindnumbingly idiotic dialogue- so in that regards I guess I can understand why it wouldn’t appeal to someone with a more a ‘standard’ taste in film.
I thought it was a beautifully told story - emotional and heartfelt without being sappy - violent but without having to revert to gratuitous, nonsensical gore. It didn’t feed you all the answers either and had a depth of character that is sadly lacking in most films these days.
I also believe it received the highest aggregate score of any film on Metacrtic this year (97% or something). Which speaks volumes.
But to someone of limited intellect and mainstream sensibilites and who rather liked The Phantom Menace I guess it would seem rather ‘boring’ and ‘sucky’.
I can imagine the banter between a bunch of those types upon leaving a screening of Pan’s Labyrinth:
[i]Dude that was soooo, like, gay and shit!!
Fuck dude you are so right on maaaan. What a shitty film man. It just fucking dragged on and nothing even happened.
Yeah, let’s go fuck some shit up and go back to my joint and watch Die Hard 2.

below is an artist’s rendition of what somebody who prefers The Phantom Menace to Pan’s Labyrinth and Last Sucker to Rape And Honey would possibly look like…
Oh for fuck’s sake. To prefer that trainwreck over a work of genius like Pan’s Labyrinth is just …words fail me on that one.
“The world’s most expensive school play” was how one critic once panned Phantom Menace.
I thought that description was pretty adequate.
Fuck that was a terrible, terrible film. How Lucas managed to fuck up his own franchise will go down as one of the great mysteries of all time. The Bermuda Triangle has got nothing on this guy.
He supposedly made this movie for kids, yet there’s enough perplexing political hyperbole contained within to confuse a Rhodes scholar. Then he populates the film with the dullest, least convincing bunch of characters in sci fi history.
Trade blockades? Political unrest? Social upheaval? Talking Rabbit Lizards? Immaculate Conceptions?? Votes of no confidence?? Dialogue seemingly written by an 8 year old??? “Yiippppiieeeee”??!?!
What the fuck kind of egomaniacal trip was this Lucas guy on???
I’d say maybe only Pluto Nash or Lady In The Water are the only films I can think of off the top of my head that I would consider worse than Phantom Menace.
Although, to be honest I haven’t seen Wicked Lake yet.
not to mention some people just can’t deal with having to read subtitles in a movie, no matter how good it is.
For the record I adore subtitles.
Kinda funny some of you wanna bash me for not liking Pan’s Labyinth. I saw that movie as too fucking predictable when I was not expecting it to be predictable at all… Where as Phantom Menace was completely predictable however that was it’s appeal. I knew going into PM what it was going to be, whereas PL I was expecting more and got less.
Some of you people are gullible as fuck when it comes to Peligro. I never said/wrote PM was “enjoyable” Hell I don’t even talk/write like that (although world’s most expensive School play sounds about right which means PL was even worse so Suck it!). I can’t stand Family Guy but apparently because I don’t agree with Peligro, the end all be all of everything that is cool, that Apparently makes me a lame cartoon… So you all love, PL I don’t, Move on!
Whatever…

Yeah, We must’ve watched two different movies. Wouldn’t call the story beautifully told, thought it was sappy, little more violent than I was expecting, Felt like it spoon fed ALL of the answers to the audience and Depth of Character?? Are you fucking NUTZ Peligro? I mean more so than most know you to be? perhaps the lines were better delivered but there was no character depth at all! Bruce willis with his 1 dimensional character portrayals could’ve fit right in.
but to someone of limited intellect and… it would seem rather ‘boring’ and ‘sucky’.
the way you write this makes it read as if you would’ve hated it rather than championing it. we all know you are obviously over compensating for something with the way you hold yourself here. Perhaps your branch is a little to close to the family tree trunk??

not bashing you just making a comment… I know alot of people that seem to have a problem with reading subtitles while watching a film. For the record I liked both for different reasons. Yeah the star wars movie was a kids movie but so what. It held my interest and I thought the obi wan parts especially were great. PLus it served it’s purpose. If episode 1 wasn’t like that, I don’t think episode 3 would have been as good as it was. Obviously it was a kids movie. The main star was a kid. Couldn’t really be avoided to tell anakins life story without his youth being told. Also people’s expectations were super high going in to the point of it being inevitable to be a letdown. I mean camp out for 3 months to see a movie and you’re setting yourself up for a letdown.

I was responding to this. When you finish a line like that with “…Suck it!”, you open yourself up to ridicule that may be harsher than normal from someone who say, happens to prefer Pan’s Labyrinth over that flaming piece of intellectually devoid shit you prefer.
