Films of 2007

Sorry if this has been done already in another thread but anyway:

  1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  2. Rescue Dawn
  3. Sunshine
  4. The Lives of Others
  5. INLAND EMPIRE
  6. Apocalypto
  7. American Gangster
  8. The Bourne Ultimatum
  9. The Counterfeiters
  10. The Last King of Scotland

and the worst: Hitman, Stardust, Babel, The Illusionist.

I haven’t made it out to too many new movies this year, and this list is in no particular order, and I’m not sure if some fall into last years films, but here are some recentfilms I enjoyed…

Pans Labyrinth - Nothing short of amazing! One of those films that wakes you out of the stupor of day to day life and shows you the awe and wonder that surrounds us.

Inland Empire - David Lynch isn’t for everybody, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it as an introduction to his work, that being said Inland Empire was a bold, daring experiment who’s outcome was a joy to behold! While I will miss Lynch’s beautiful, Technicolor 35mm works it’s great to see a filmmaker have the balls to make a feature film on a consumer-level camera and come up with a better film than 99% of the garbage spewing out of the Hollywood sewer system on a constant basis. Bravo Lynch!!!

28 Weeks Later - Simply one of the best horror sequels EVER!

No Country for Old Men - Best from the Coens in YEARS.

The Host - Fun Korean monster movie that used CGI the right way… sparingly and to ENHANCE the script, not be the backbone of the picture.

Vacancy - Surprisingly good, creepy horror film. Give this one a chance, it’s better than it looks!

1408 - Another new horror film thats better than the previews make it out to look. Worth a peek.

Now don’t be hatin, I know there is a lack of intellectual films on my list, but that is mainly because of trying to save money and getting older movies from the library or watching newer movies in the 2nd run theaters, but thats all I gots for new movies for the time being…

Got out to the theater only a few times this year, and it was a mixed bag:

Control - very good biopic, great portrayal of Ian Curtis by Sam Riley, I’ll be getting this on DVD.

The Mist - good story, sub-par acting, hokey special FX, great ending! Probably only ever watch it again on cable, if nothing else is on and I’m bored. Once was enough.

Dan In Real Life - I like The Office, but never really planned to see this one. Ended up being a movie date. The power of the vagina. Good acting by Carell, but the big family was so over-the-top Hollywood formulated, it was hard to endure. Ok film, definitely a chic flick, definitely forgettable.

28 Weeks Later - unbelievable gory! Really good film, total creepfest. Nothing like watching a shitload of zombies get mowed down by helicopter blades. Can’t wait for 28 Months Later.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - funny documentary that I wouldn’t mind watching again. The guys in this film are the absolute definition of nerds.

The Simpsons Movie: Surprisingly very funny movie, better than the last 5+ years of the show.

Hot Fuzz - Awesome, hilarious movie. Possibly funnier than Shaun of The Dead (though hard to compare), and one of the most painful impalement scenes ever. A keeper on DVD.

Knocked Up - A friend brought this one over to watch. I didn’t laugh once. One or two mildly amusing moments, but the whole thing is an overhyped bore. Probably the reason I avoided Superbad. I want my two hours back.

Haven’t seen No Country For Old Men, but I hear it’s really good, so that’s on my to-do list.

It’s Xmas time, so off to watch Better Off Dead for the zillionth time. Do you have Christmas in France?

1002

Must Tarrentino and Rodriguez be so quid pro quo obvious about everything??? One would hope that their future colabs do NOT result in the sexism and occasional galimatias that has become modern films biggest flaw. Q.T’s work of course can be sexual bawdy nd weird but for chrissakes he should NOT be allowed to overindulge in topics and styles that are not in his purview. I suggest he grow the fuck up and try to make some signifgant attempts at verism and speculative realism instead of reheated postmodernist wannbe 70’s white trash fantasy.

I’m tired. Maybe I didn’t catch this, but you do realize it’s an exploitation homage? As much as I am getting tired of such things (like Rob Zombie and Eli Roth) that are becoming slowly popular, I actually like these films. They’re just popcorn fare, I don’t think they’re meant to be taken so seriously. Tarantino != Orson Welles.

On that note:

GRINDHOUSE - Dug it, would see again
SUPERBAD - Hilarity
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - The taker, should but WILL NOT get a Best Picture award (or even a nom)

Mr. Brooks… Seeing Kevin Costner as a (semi) sadistic motherfucker was GREAT.
