Fave Download (SP)

I am a reborn Skinny Puppy fan - used to listen to them in the early nineties, but then stopped as it kinda seemed samey after a while.

After about eleven years I’ve finally started to listen to them again and am enjoying the ‘experience’ immensely (wow! I’ve seen the light!! again!)

Anyways, I’m curious about the SP sideproject, Download. Have heard alot of good things and have recently ordered ‘The Eyes Of Stanley Pain’ through amazon.

Was this a good choice? What are their other albums like? Different from release to release?? Anything to avoid?? Would be grateful for any feedback here.

Have also ordered ‘The Dragon Experience’ by cEvin Key…which is supposedly brilliant!

“furnace” is my favorite of the download i’ve heard, personally.

check out HiLT - “Jorney to the center of the bowl”. I never actually looked into any of their side-projects other than HiLT and oHGr.

I loveee Download.

EOSP was also my first release…it’s pretty aggressive stuff. Don’t expect it to sound too Puppy like…unless we’re talking about the more electronic side of Puppy on the process.

Furance, their first album, is my favorite. Mainly because Spybey’s influence on the music (whereas on EOSP he’s mostly just the vocalist) . It seems a bit more “experimental” in sound than EOSP.

on a side, note, EOSP is mainly Dwayne’s demos, some dating back to right after Last Rights came out. Outafter from this release was supposed to be a SP song on the Crow soundtrack, but Ogre didn’t want to do vocals for it.

After EOSP, III came out. It’s very different from the previous 2…it’s chilled back electronic grooves. Not my favorite, but it’s good to listen to at night.

Effector seems to be a fan favorite. It’s also very different…niceee work with cEv and Philth. grooves, not as laid back as III but not as aggressive as previous works.

other download releases:
Microscopic- the companion e.p. to Furance…features a few remixes and some b-sides which are really awesome. Genesis P. is on Furance, Microscopic, and Eyes of Stanley Pain.

Sidewinder- the companion e.p. to EOSP…pretty much the same concept as Micrscopic…remixes/b-sides. Good stuff.

Charlie’s Family- the soundtrack to the film of the same name (which has just recently come out on DVD as I believe “the manson family” ) Actually sounds very different from all other albums…although it came out in 96, much of it was recorded in 94. Freaky late night jam music…also features a track that uses Puppy Gristle.

Inception- only available from the SubCon site…this was as the title suggest, the original download tracks, all from 94-95. sounds nothing like any other download relese, except charlie’s family because some of the tracks ended up on charlie’s family.

III Steps Forward- also only available at the SubCon site…was originally intended to be a remix album but only one remix surfaced, the rest is either outtakes from Effector or brand new tracks. Good stuff!

as for the dragon experience: I personally really enjoy that album. if you like hell-o death day puppy stuff (film, centre bullet) or anything on back and forth 3, you’ll love this disc. very epic stuff indeed.

hope that helps! any other info about other sideprojects just ask [cool]

i would say get effector immidiatley. i also enjoy music for cats.

If you like the ambient side of things, definitely get III and Effector.

For the aggressive, get Microscopic and Furnace.

In any case, you definitely made a good choice with EOSP. It’s phenomenal.

The Dragon Experience is a good one as well. If you have ever heard SP’s Brap 3, you’ll love it.

You’re missing out man. Download fucking kicks serious ass. Ditto what everyone else said, but I’d like to add that the Charlie’s Family CD is a great piece of work…bizarre haunting soundscapes with plenty of horror sampling, experimental bursts of noise, interesting percussion. A few tracks use pieces from the Puppy Gristle session, as someone else had mentioned.

I’d recommend Charlie’s Family especially for those who really enjoyed Paul Barker’s Pink Anvil release and anyone into that campy horror side of industrial music.

i’m starting to agree with you. shit, i guess i’m gonna need to go buy one myself.

Not much I can add that hasn’t already been said, other than The Dragon Experience kicks ass (yeah, I know it’s been said, but I feel I should reiterate it. Plus I’m not too familiar with Cevin’s other Side Projects. )

hilt is some fun stuff. really funny (on purpose) at times. listening to journey to the center of the bowl now for the first time in a while…what a head trip!

By the way, does anyone have a copy of that rap parody that Skinny Puppy made? I’ve looked everywhere for it on the internet, p2p whatever but haven’t found it. Does an mp3 copy exist?

Effector seems to be a fan favorite. It’s also very different…niceee work with cEv and Philth. grooves, not as laid back as III but not as aggressive as previous works.

I haven’t heard the album, but I’ve heard this is the one to get.

A friend told me to avoid III and to tread carefully when purchasing Furnace as some of it is a bit ‘naff’.

Microscopic- the companion e.p. to Furance…features a few remixes and some b-sides which are really awesome.

Used to have this but it was stolen. I think I know who took it too.

Freaky late night jam music…also features a track that uses Puppy Gristle.

Puppy Gristle!! Where where where is this album available from? I need a copy. NOW.

as for the dragon experience: I personally really enjoy that album.

I also have this on order at the moment. Hope it’s good.

Cevin lost me after EOSP. I know everyone raves about III, Effector and his solo stuff and that Involution disc, but they’re really lost on me. They’re just too minimalist with beats that just don’t work well. I guess I just don’t get that style of stuff.

And the rap parody was Lee Chubby King. It’s moderately amusing. I think I’ve got mp3s somewhere.

Peligro, Puppy Gristle is available from Metropolis Records. Uggh I know…

But I can e-mail it to you if you want. It’s only one 40 minute track. Really kickass shit behind some of the greatest in the genre,.

am i the only one who thinks the dragon experience was a peice of shit? that and music for cats… ugh. just because he was in skinny puppy doesn’t mean you have to lap up his shit and act like its candy.

and the idea that ogre secretly did a vocal pass for puppy gristle and it was just recently found is a bit too convenient for me.

Metropolis Records? Never heard of 'em.

Thanks for the offer. I may try to get it off Soulseek first though.

I used to hate music for cats…but recently I’m really starting to like it. late night jams.

Music For Cats wasn’t all that great, but The Ghost In Each Room is facking sweet. Also whichever album had Running (Back & Forth) which I think was Dragon Experience is delicious too. I wanna hear new Skinny Puppy, last I heard they wanted to do a remix album for Greater Wrong Of The Right. Theyve been going in a cool direction musically but Ogre needs to throw on some different effects on his vocalness again, I like that he knows how to sing now, but umm yeah I wanna hear Worlock with the distorty voals again. Neuwerld was sweet though, thats some neato cutting & pasting. I dont know why they had to have the same chorus (New world order) as NWO though, I hate it when bands have the same song cincept or name as other bands (Fear Factory - Bite The Hand That Bleeds & NIN - Bite The Hand That Feeds, they both suck total ass and its just that much more annoying), but its a totally different song. Man this class is boring, fucking school.

ogre doesn’t know how to sing now, he just found an effect that makes it sound like he does.

am i the only one who thinks the dragon experience was a peice of shit?

probably. hard to say.

that and music for cats… ugh.

it’s not as good as ‘music for airports’.

just because he was in skinny puppy doesn’t mean you have to lap up his shit and act like its candy.

ok. good. glad we cleared that up.
