emergency fundraiser for me

Hi everyone -

sorry it has been a long time since I last rapped atcha, and that I have to re-introduce myself under extenuating circumstances. Looks like there is lots of the usual inspirational mayhem going on here, I’ll resume full participation in short order.

I will cut to the chase here - I was terminated from my job prior to last Christmas, and am in a panic trying to find ways to pay bills and rent until I can find anything else whatsoever to act as a source of income.

There’s much more detail to the story, but it’s all laid out more coherently my fundraiser page.

If anyone can help with even a few $, I will massively appreciate it. And as it says near the bottom of the pitch page, feel free to talk with me and see if maybe there’s some other project I could help you with if you’re not interested in any of the “perks”.

Thanks much for your attention.

I’ll pass but good luck. Life’s a bitch but you’re get through it.
I was hired by a for-profit university to work as an “academic advisor”, and went into this job with reasonable expectations that I would be performing some type of tutoring and counseling work. This was, in fact, not what the job really called for - this was essentially a glorified “sales” job that involved emotionally manipulating students into staying in class while they were going through periods of extreme personal hardship. I did what I could to adapt to this set of work duties, but ultimately there was no way I could succeed in this position without de-activating my conscience and being a chronic liar.[/reply]
This is also the charter school model. Its a fuckin bitch ain’t it! I hope you get back up soon.

Yeah, it took me working in a different capacity to realize just how sleazy these sorts of businesses are (this was a sort of ‘promotion’ from my tutoring gig).

When I was working face-to-face with students as a tutor, it felt like I was legitimately doing something that’d put them on the track towards achieving educational goals. In this role I was shot down every time I tried to make a suggestion to that effect; they just wanted a human Welsh Corgi to run rings around people…“why aren’t you in class?! Why aren’t you in class!!!” and to harass people not to drop from classes until the time in which their federal financial aid paid out and ‘we’ got a cut of it.

Here’s a review of the same gig on Glassdoor that is almost exactly what I experienced. Sadly I didn’t look into this stuff earlier. When I was offered the gig it was a ticket out of a previous bad situation, and I filtered out anything that could have made me have second thoughts.

MEGA HIGH-FIVES to my latest contributor, thank you! Yours will not be forgotten. I regret that I can’t deliver the thank you message with the intensity of Proscriptor…

And for those who can’t contribute, well, all I can do is channel my best Bob Larson doing his radio $$$ drive:

"Folks, listen: we’re a full 30 minutes into the program now, and I haven’t had ONE $1,000 Hero For The Hurting or one $5,000 Champion step up to help this ministry.

RIGHT NOW in the studio I’m sitting across from a man - Boyd Rice - who wants to see good Christian people thrown to the lions. Regular ministries wouldn’t come within a mile of such a guest - they wouldn’t have the guts! I need YOU to get on that phone, to call 1-800-821-TALK, and to pledge the biggest contribution you can so that I can continue doing spiritual warfare against the forces of evil!"

…or something like that. Maybe I missed my true calling and that’s why I’m in the present situation :-/

Why not make an offer to pay people back if they help you out? Seems fair.

I would do that, but I simply don’t know when I’ll have the means to do so. I’ve made it a point never to take out loans for anything other than a complete necessity (having a car in places where there’s otherwise no transportation infrastructure).

I have some ‘offline’ arrangements now to pay back a couple donors with writing a grant proposal and doing some dog-sitting. With stuff like that I can give people a much quicker return on their investment

You were working for National American University? One of my cousins went there as a student and she got majorly shafted somehow, though I don’t know much of the details. Something involving loans, I think.

Yes, that was my place of employment. Would be curious to know more about what happened in that particular situation.

It really is one of the top two worst employers I’ve worked for - they can pretty much be summed up by the famous incident in which they had a system-wide staff vacation to Vegas, which cost millions of dollars, but were then incredibly behind budget weeks later and had to implement tons of layoffs. I’d hate to be one of the employees who lost everything at the slots or tables and then came back to be fired on top of that.

LOL. You want a handout because you are a failure? Fuck off with your internet panhandling. I hope no one was stupid enough to send you money.

Oh, look kids, a cuntbag wind-up artist who has spent the entirety of his brief posting history writing mailed-in, contrarian put-downs of veteran board members.

Surely such a person must be a shining beacon of success, so weary from brokering peace negotiations between warring countries and from developing miracle vaccines, that he sometimes has to alight on message boards like this just to remind himself what it feels like to be a normal, salt-of-the-earth human.

Sorry to harsh your mellow, but yes there were people “stupid” enough to send me money, both as part of the fundraiser and In Real Life.

This COULD be because I worked hard and succeeded in forging lasting bonds between myself and others…most of whom are successful and interesting people that know from first-hand experience that life is an unpredictable series of advances and retreats, and that extenuating circumstances can come out of nowhere to fuck up even the most well-considered, carefully strategized lives.

But hey, then again, it could be that people are entertained by my failure and they want to buy into the entertaining spectacle of seeing me crumble in public. That must be it.

Go practice heckling at an open mic night, so you can build up your XP and then come back to try putting me in my place again. Until then, shut the fuck up when grown folks is talkin’.

I really don’t care what people have to say about each other online . . . if someone puts their shit on a board they kind of do so at their own discretion and risk.

God knows I’ve got a few comments about people and am pretty free in sharing. But it would be nice if people actually had the minimally-sized balls necessary to post shit from their normal profiles instead of creating separate accounts to do so.

Maybe Grumpy can take it to the lab for some DNA sampling, hahaha!!!

I agree. In my day, we resorted to sucking dick at truck stops when we fell on hard times. Tomasz is a total asshole for trying to deprive lonely truckers of oral gratification.

Hey now, it’s not that I’m opposed to the idea of “servicing” our hard-working freight industry employees, it’s just that I consider that my ‘charity’ work. Few are as committed to Making America Great Again as this hearty breed. For me to actually charge them for a moment’s relief would feel DIRTY.

And besides, in my current state, I simply can’t afford the gas to drive out of Austin up to the nearest BucEe’s mega-truckstop, which is all the way up in Killeen. All the more need for me to continue with my panhandling efforts!

Yes, because everyone that has fallen on hard times is a “failure.” You are the fucking problem with this country. You have no sense of community, you are a greedy half wit that is all too happy to help push someone down with out realizing how it it pulls you down too. Unless you have something decent to contribute, whether it be $ or words of support, then fuck off!

Agreed. Shit can happen to anyone at any time.
These days, most people are one paycheck away from disaster due to wages not keeping up with expenses.

My aunt and uncle’s house burnt to the ground due to a lightning strike, killing my aunt’s mother in the fire (the bolt hit the corner of the house where her bedroom was while she was sleeping). Fortunately, my aunt, uncle, and cousins were out of state at the time. They built a new house on the same site. Unfortunately the contractor they hired was shitty, causing several issues with the new house that had to be fixed. They ended up having to live with my grandparents for quite some time until they could move into the new house.

Thanks Mooney and Grmpy for your understanding. Life success or failure isn’t a linear affair.

At my previous job I was having to deal with people in situations exactly like what Mooney mentioned, and constantly had to argue with some soulless drones in central administration about why I didn’t feel like they’d benefit from racking up student loan debt on top of trials they were already facing. So for my impudence I had all of my phone calls and personal communications monitored and “critiqued” up until the point where I got shit-canned.

If one believes in karmic law / cosmic retribution, maybe this down period is my payback for having to increase the negative energy in people’s lives…even if I did it unwillingly and while trying to find other ways out before the inevitable firing.

I asked her about it on Facebook and here’s the gifst of what happened: On their advice, she took out two private loans with very high interest rates. These are the type that don’t go away even if you die and they don’t have to negotiate for lower rates, or whatever. Admittedly, she probably should have read the fine print, but she was only 19 and didn’t know any better.

They also claimed that some courses she took there would transfer anywhere and whoops, turns out that wasn’t true. I don’t know whether that came from outright lying or just a misinformed advisor, though.

That’s the problem with those places, frontline employees are deliberately kept in the dark about crucial info like that so that you never know if you’re being willfully deceived or just dealt with by someone who doesn’t know what’s going on.

I give that operation maybe another couple years tops before the Feds shutter their doors. Right now they have the good luck to be feeding off the failure of similar institutions, but should they become the only fish in the ‘for profit college’ pond, I don’t think they’re going to like the added scrutiny that invites.

oh, fundraiser update: I have job interviews today and tomorrow. If either of them results in a job I’ll pull the plug on the 'raiser, and even for those who didn’t request anything I’ll try to cobble together a little ‘thank you’ pack of sorts. Will keep you all posted.

Personally I think you should just move back to Chicago. Because it’s the best city ever.
