effect of musicians' personal beliefs / ideologies on your listening enjoyment?

I kinda burned out on the whole Boyd Rice/Feral House crew. Not out of any moral approbation but more dredging up the same serial killer/social darwinism/etc. material for thirty years, repeating the lame excuse of “exploring the dark side of humanity” without any real, thought-out insight or commentary.

I’ve had cordial and friendly communications with Adam Parfrey before, and some of the favorite titles in my library are released through his imprint. Though he is in the publishing business and I think has to satiate a readership that will reliably buy anything released on those subjects you mention.

It’s hard for me to tell how much of what he publishes he actually stands by with complete conviction, and in fact some of the fringe conspiracy stuff irritates me more than the material which continues to provide the same answers to questions already posed about the “dark side” of humanity…I have to wonder what the poor guy was thinking when putting out these books about the moon landing hoax, ‘ancient astronauts’ and war in outer space, etc. etc.

Which is to say nothing of when F.H. also had a coffee table book dedicated to the Suicide Girls…come on, a masturbatory aid released in hardcover?! Doesn’t that make it a little more challenging to use the book for its intended purpose?

I think Parfrey just likes giving a voice to strange and alternative ideas.

People Like Dave Mustain, yeah his politics are fucked up now, but the dude really thinks he’s trying to do good. He’s not out trying to kill anyone. We just have a basic political difference of opinion. That being said, I won’t necessarily boycott his products, but I certainly won’t by them new. I’ll buy whatever album used, that way he gets no money from me off of the deal. That’s my rational, although, Dave has made it easy for me because everything that I’ve heard after “the system has failed” has been utter crap.

Judging from the [url http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/megadeth-new-album-track-listing-revealed-2/]newly released tracklist from the upcoming Megadeth album, should we hazard a guess as to whether or not that trend’ll continue?

Track 11:a tribute to Kirstie Alley and Travolta?

I mean, what else could it be? Mustaine is known to be a huge fan of sentimental 80s comedies.

I also hear that one of the outtakes, to be released on the ‘Japan bonus tracks’ version of the CD, is called “Three Men and a Baby.” The title of which is a reference to Illuminati child sacrifice rituals.

Upon reflection:

I think Billy Corgan is a douche bag because he’s always trashing his former band mates and then replacing them with clones. Does he only audition Asian guitarists and female Bass players? That’s insulting. I haven’t considered him anything more than an ass for 2 decades.

I think Morrissey’s politics are over the top and I generally roll my eyes at his every comment. However, I have a historical and pop-songwriting appreciation for the Smiths. Some of his solo shit is good, if I’m being honest. But I haven’t paid for any of his music in years.

Kanye is just an ass, despite Gunnar’s claims to the contrary. I would never pay for his music, because he’s a giant arrogant Godzilla if an asshole. But, I can’t deny that Yeezus, from what I’ve heard, is anti-pop brilliance that I can’t help for respect him for, but will never buy that album.

I think Peligro was also among the valiant banner-carriers for Kanye, wherever he is now.

The hype around Yeezus amused me because, like, on one hand he’s putting out a ‘coverless’ CD that mimics the design of Raster-Noton albums from 15 years ago, apparently going for this whole “it’s all about ‘the music’ now” / “anti-promotional” angle. Which, on its own merits, is fine.

But then he continues with his usual antics, making big scenes at awards shows and crap like this…the spotlight-hogging involved in that defeats the whole purpose of packaging and ‘promoting’ the record in the way that he did. A missed chance to be sure.

^Saul Williams also did that style like 5-7 years ago. Trent even produced one of his albums.

i actually stopped listening to the smashing pumpkins after the transgender bashing he did years ago.

i also stopped listening to metallica for a period when i saw a video of hetfield making fun of layne staley .

The immortal Niggy Tardust…best thing Trent was ever involved with…

Transgender bashing? What did he do? Bash his little wiener until it turned into a vagina?

Thinking about some of Supermanic’s comments now, I think I’ll have to backtrack just a bit with my own stance . . .

I would have to say that, although a musician’s personal beliefs and ideologies do not effect my listening enjoyment, their behaviour kind of does. And it’s not about changing the song’s merit, but about my ability to say, “Yeah! That guy’s awesome! I AM a fan!”

The ideology is immaterial to me. But when said artist presents himself as a complete dildo, that gets to me sometimes.

I’ll just use Hank Williams Jr. as an example. I really like Hank’s catalog of work. His songs are timeless, ass-kicking, and awesome, as is his voice. And I don’t give a crap what his personal politics are.

But when he had that little PR fiasco a few years back regarding his lame-brained comments about Obama and such, it just made me cringe. No, I didn’t cringe because he disliked Obama. I cringed at his inability to explain himself after he said some really retarded things . . . or to at least apologize for his inability to explain them properly . . . and then he played the martyr card. It was painful to watch and I couldn’t support the “man” in that case even though I still dug his music.

So it effected my enjoyment of his work overall because it put me in the weird situation of now having to either justify that I think Hank is great even though he acted like a total dildo, or just not talking about the dude . . . . and I like talking about stuff that I like. So eat shit, Bocephus. You kind of messed that up for me.

That’s a very important lesson indeed: quality of presentation and articulation can make a hostile ideology palatable, or can make you sour on one that you already cling to. Makes me wonder what the world would be like if, say, anarchists tended to look like Scarlett Johansson and smell of lilacs instead of being either unwashed ‘crust punks’ or dour professorial types.

As much as I think “Bocephus” is the greatest stage name ever (you have to be a true badass to give yourself a handle that sounds like a kind of fungal infection), the Obama ‘Hitler’ comments were abysmally dumb.
