EErie Von- body and blood

HOLY SHIT!
the original bassist For danzig started his own solo thing in '98. And i was always kinda put off by the guy just ‘cause he seemed so retarded acting in those danzig home videos, but i just got his first offering and it is phuckin awesome!!
stays with the whole horror film kinda theme (But not really… hard to describe) it’s a cross between blues and scary country music… I completely loathe country music! but this shit is AWESOME. You can definitely hear many of his influences. feels like misfits (But not fast or punkish), his vox are in the vain of glenn danzig but not a cheap rip off. The songs are slow-mid tempo and his voice is really very haunting…
I guess it would be like if you took old(50’s 60’s era) slow horror/suspense movie music and threw some slow blues riffs onto it and then sang with a danzig-ish/johnny cash country drawl…
I’m not doing this review justice, there is no country sound to this record…
check it out if you liked danzig II, and you liked the atmosphere created by misfits, combined with slow lyrics… maybe if johnny cash sang the lucifuge album???
I don’t know it’s just fuckin’ great!!

Ugh, that album sounds like it was recorded with a Mr. Microphone and a broken tape recording by the Downs’ Syndrome Audio Engineering Society.

I like Eerie’s albums too, but what I am really looking forward to when it is released is this…

i don’t know… that gives it the appeal, certainly contributes to the mood of the album.

chemicalmeat

never seen his photography… are all of his cds the same moody/bluesy pieces that body and blood is?

I agree grmpy sometimes a low-fi recording gives some albums a certain character. Authentic is maybe the word I’m looking for, but that is not meant to denigrate highly polished efforts. I mean would the Ramones first album be the same if the guitar and bass weren’t in separate speakers [:)] It probably would have had the same overall impact, but that mix is forever part of its charm.

There is another band that I listen to Parker and Lily that is decidedly low-fi meaning lots of their music was recorded in various hotel rooms. Sadly they are not around anymore, but if ever there was a band that sounded like the house band in a David Lynch film they were it.

ugh could you imagine if somebody tried to pro-tools out that ramones cd? joey with pitch-shifting would be some form of sonic suicide

Yes grmpy they are all in that vein, I’d recommend Bad Dream No.13 his latest I believe. There’s a song on there called Bone Drone that is like a lost Tom Waits song with a theremin melody.

Eerie Von was the official photographer for the Misfits back in the day, as well as being a roadie. If you’ve ever seen the inner sleeve for Walk Among Us, it prominently features his work for them. Also he shot the cover for that 12 Hits From Hell cd which I believe you have a copy of right?

Eerie was a classmate of Paul (Doyle) Caiafa in high school so he was around for the whole early scene in New Jersey and New York, not to mention he was the bassist for Samhain then Danzig. In essence he’s the musician who stuck with Glenn the longest.

Awesome!! the wife thought Track 3 sounded very Tom Waits…

Eerie Von story:

I saw Danzig in a small venue in New York in early '88 when I was living in the US. Must have been only 100 people there. I daresay it was one of Danzig’s (the band) first shows.

Anyway, I got to meet Eerie and Chuck Biscuits after the show. At first I found Eerie to be shy and stand off-ish but after I offered him a cigarette he loosened up and started to chat politely with me. I asked him what it was like to work for Glenn and be a part of his history. He said it was a dream come true and that he was Glenn’s biggest fan. He also said that Samhain never really got off the ground artistically and that it was best that they disbanded and started writing material that wasn’t so ‘cartoony’.

I also asked him what, if any, new (at the time) bands he had been checking out. He shrugged shyly and said “Oh…not a hell of a lot” but that he had bought a 7" inch single by a little known band called Soundgarden which he was digging a lot!!!

excellent story! He seemed “shy” (Not to be confused with humble) in the interviews I’ve seen him in. Not a great trait for someone on stage or even that tall.
He had an excellent assessment of Sam Hain though, and a damn shame they didn’t take Sam Hain in the direction that he has taken his solo efforts. Damn I’m still blown away by that album. I’ve listened to it 3 times today already! Luckily for me the Wife likes it too (She hears it as an evil Tom Waits) so I didn’t have to take to much grief for playing it soo much today

P.S. Sound garden STILL SUCKS!

P.S. Sound garden STILL SUCKS!

Well…yes and no.

You gotta admit that for a (short) while there, in the early 90’s, they fucking ruled the planet - next to Butthole Surfers, Ministry and Faith No More.

Anyway, I do believe it’s been at least 8 or 9 years since I last sat down and listened to a Danzig album end to end. Personally, Danzig’s music grew stale very quickly. By about 1995 I had completely lost interest in the guy and jumped ship…probably along with half of his fanbase.

Some of those Misfits (and even Samhain) albums are still cool as hell though and do get the odd spin or two when I’m in the right mood.

Oh, I forgot to mention!!!:

That Danzig gig was also memorable for the fact that before the band came on stage, I met the most incredible looking girl I had ever seen in my entire life. I’m not kidding. I was completely flawed - something which does not happen too often as I am as picky as all hell - and don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone since that could match her. She was amazing - like every chick from every wet dream you ever had as a teenager rolled into one. The living embodiment of gorgeous. The kind of girl people have (probably) named mountains and tropical islands after.

(drools)

I spoke to her for 5 minutes and bought her a drink and then she disappeared - never to be seen again.

She was so good looking it was almost as if she wasn’t real. What a temptress.

THat’s just great marketing! ruling the planet has nothing to do with being good! and they suck!
too bad about your chick though! probably ended up back stage with a cock in every one of her orafices or worse, she might’ve become a soccer mom!

There’s a difference between a low-fi recording and an incompetent recording.

You need to give this a new listen, sir. The sound is KICK ASS! I don’t think the album would hold the same personality if it had a slick production.
