Early Ministry Tracks

Working on something. I tried putting together a list of all the different versions of early songs in a roughly chronological order, split by officially released and unreleased. Ministry-only for this list. No Revco, Blackouts, Carmichaels, etc.

Any of the other old-school fans mind looking over this for anything I missed?

*** - has only surfaced as a live recording, but a studio version could exist

****- Supposedly exists but hasn’t surfaced in any version

I went over the list and I think this covers everything.

The “Oceanside Away” track may also be Ocean Drive and/or The Harmonica Song (mentioned in the prongs interviews with Patty J. and Doug Chamberlin)

Doug mentioned 5 or 6 other songs that went unreleased, but those may include some of the 1984 cuts that have already surfaced.

I was unaware that the 12" mix of Work For Love differs on the UK single, I’m going to give that a spin this evening.

The With Sympathy demos get to be confusing at times as many of them sound like the final album versions with only a minor difference. Revenge, I Wanted To Tell Her and She’s Got A Cause all have a demo with something strikingly different about it, but that’s all that I recall.

Work For Love is only different on one of the UK 12" versions. It’s this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MINISTRY-Work-For-Love-UK-12-single-PS-1983-ex-ex-/360739474884?pt=UK_Records&hash=item53fdbf8dc4

I actually don’t have that exact one. I have the test pressing (same cat# but has a white cover with a blue Ministry sticker on it) so it should be the same mix.

I also have the release from Spain that has the same cover and track list.

I’ll compare these tonight and see how they differ.

Those 7" mixes are definitely cool. I remember throwing those on the turntable for the first time and being totally surprised.

So where did all the other old Ministry fans go? Did everyone vacate?

I just think we don’t have anything to add. Looks like you covered it all.

Bisquit,

I went through my WFL 12"s and all of them had the same extended mix. Looks like I need to pick up a copy of the standard UK 12" as well.

Good job on the list!

Ditto.

Looks good to me. Thanks for summarizing!

The version of “nature of love” that was released is a remix according to the liner notes of the twelve inch singles CD.

Which leads me to think that there is a version that wasn’t released, which matched the sound of the live version more.

Hardman. a 1983 live version exists.

So Al has now sold all the Wax Trax! material to Cleopatra, so ready your ears for tons of mediocre remixes!

If you’re not sure of the list discogs should have you covered.

Which show? I’m all ears on this one.

Wow! You’re right. Hopefully some of these gems make it to an official release. At the very least I’m hoping they have plans to release Primental and Same Old Madness on CD.

Just got this one in the mail and the 12" mix is the same as all the other WFL 12"s I have (I have around 7 different ones)

Bisquit, do you know what is different about this particular mix?

Hardman. a 1983 live version exists.

It does? I recall writing that in Al’s coach house apartment with Franke, and Al, during the summer of '83…but I don’t remember ever playing it out live.

It’s the only unrecorded/unplayed song that I remember fairly well. Could it have been '84? I’d left by then so that’s maybe why I don’t recall.

Sorry, didn’t mean to make you go out and buy the wrong 12". I actually just pulled out the vinyl rips I did ages ago. The US 12" version is 6:19. The UK one is 3:52 and is actually the same as Work For Love Short. So yeah, it’s not really a separate mix. Sorry about that. How could I ever lose track of all the distinctive remixes of that song

It does have the most awesome exchange during the bridge though - “I said girl I’ve been trying for you for so long, why do you keep rejecting me? - you don’t have what it takes. - But I’m willing to woooork!” The only one I like better is the 7" mix where he calls her “love”.

No worries…I actually got the 12" pretty cheap and I didn’t have it in the collection already. The discogs page also said it was a different mix. The UK 7" does have the different Short Mix with the same artwork, so I can see where the confusion is.
