Whether or not you were a ZZ Top fan, you cannot deny how huge and influential these guys were to the rock landscape and how absolutely iconic Gibbons/Hill was as a duo both musically and image-wise.
They were serious giants in this realm and even though I would probably be considered just a casual fan, I’m really saddened at this news. Whenever we lose monster icons that are themselves stand alone monuments of rock and roll and whose personalities and presence seem totally irreplaceable not just in my own narrow tastes, but to global pop culture as a whole (Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, etc) I feel a major blow.
Anyway, condolences to his fans, friends, and family. He will be greatly missed.
I’m not a huge ZZ Top fan but have a handful of their early material. By the time Eliminator dropped, I didn’t care for the sound anymore. Sorry to learn Dusty passed on.
I read that about odenkirk. im hoping its just a publicity stunt to drum up conversation about bcs… they didnt say why he was hospitalized i hope hes doing well.
I really dig the 70s ZZ stuff but they kind of lost me with the slick 80s sound…but still, the videos are fun and they are a tough band not to like…just fun good times…
I heard Odenkirk collapsed on the set and then I read that it was something kind of severe…don’t know of that is just internet gossip or what…I love Better Call Saul and always thought he was funny whenever he popped up on some random show or film…hope he pulls through…
Yeah, my sister just texted me this one.
It actually hits me pretty hard.
He was such a hero to me. I loved his passion, style, energy, business acumen, and creativity.
Mr. Microphone, GLH Formula #9, RonCo Food Dehydrator, Showtime Rotisserie…
He totally pioneered the long-form paid advertisements we know now as “infomercials”. I don’t think I ever bought a single product, but I could watch those infomercials over and over. When I was in college I actually did a term paper on the topic of infomercials and it was primarily based around Ron Popeil.
I hadn’t seen him on TV for a while, and I think with 1000 cable channels we just don’t stumble on and stay on such content very much anymore. Was just thinking of him as I realized he was likely getting up in years. He lived to 86. I’m curious now to see what his family is up to. He’d often feature his wife and daughters in his shows and they all seemed to be really happy and proud of everything, so I wonder if any of them are sticking with it and carrying on with his empire.
“Hey, Good Lookin’! I’ll be back to pick you up later!”
Ive read Al describing Ministry as a sped up ZZ Top before, but within the last few weeks read a story where ZZ Top took Al to dinner, paying him back for lifting some of Ministry’s percussion and using them on a whole album, I’m not sure which album.
